What's the best gear ratio for 2nd generation taco's with tire size 285/70R17? Mostly in town, highway and some off road.

If you have a v6 you'd be fine with your stock gears.

not entirely true. If you absolutely had to regear, 4.10's would be amazing for 33s. stock gearing is great for stock size tires. But to retain OEM power, you want your gears set for the size tire you're running. You could possibly get away with 4.56 but you probably wouldn't be going much over 70 mph without being over 3K rpms.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
OP, your 285/70R17s are close enough to stock to not require regearing for normal driving situations. In fact you'll probably notice a small increase in MPG?

Regearing is expensive and not an exact science. I'd avoid it if possible. Usually if you do rock-crawling and other intensive off-road, or you tow trailers you may find regearing necessary.

For my money, if I was looking at a regear, I'd invest in a supercharger instead. Problem solved.

Not true, again. Regearing is the cheapest way to get your oem power back. Speaking from experience, a Supercharger doesn't give you all of your power back that you would normally have with an SC, and these days its way more expensive to boost than to regear. Without lockers a regear is maybe 2 grand, while an SC is about 6.

This is TRUTH! With 33" tall tires my s/c v6 manual could use more gear for sure. Stock tires with factory everything shows right around 2600 @70mph. Search the forum for feedback from guys running 4.56's and 33's (I'm pretty sure all of them are stoked).

I have 295/75/16 (33.4") and I hate how much power I lost, with a Supercharged 6 speed (and all the other power adders) I might add. I'll be regearing with lockers as soon as I have the cash.

My temporary solution was to get junkyard 4cyl diffs with reasonable miles and swap them but I'm afraid 4.10's won't be low enough. Locker's and 4.56's should be part of every standard tacoma build haha.

Oh yeah 4.10s are good for 265/75/16 or so IIRC. and Agreed, lockers and gear of your choice :D

    I've supercharged a 3.4 Tacoma and re-geared my current 2.7 Tacoma.
S/C cost me $1700 used + $1000 for the 7th injector and pulley.
    New gears cost me $1150.
Much better power gain with the re-gear over the S/C. Based on having done both, I'd do a re-gear any day before a S/C

Where do you feel the difference? I've done the same and to be honest with you I havent noticed a change. Maybe slightly on steeper grade inclines but i've never felt my truck had enough torque...

I feel like I notice a difference in all areas of driving. Around town, the truck requires less throttle to accelerate and much less throttle to maintain speed. On the highway, I'm not losing speed up hills and require less throttle to maintain speed. This has resulted in better mpg's as well. I went from 3.91's and 31's to 4.88's and 33/12.50 and my truck feels way more powerful and responsive than before. This is evident on my ultra-gauge by getting slightly better MPG's as before with a 2" larger (diameter and width) and 10lb heavier tire. I accelerate quicker and maintain speed better at a lower throttle position % than before.

I recently lifted my truck 3" and added 30" tires. I have a 2006 Taco 2wd 2.7L manual trans (5 lug) and I don't know what is the factory gear ratio. The VIN says A05A/R155 but I have no idea what that means.

The stock OEM tires are 215/75R15. What new gears would you guys recommend to get back factory power (if not stronger but not too much because I want to keep decent gas mileage)? Would 4.11 gear work?

And how much $$ will I be looking to spend? Thanks!
