Tailgate Gap

Hello guys. I am new to Tacoma, and today I found there is a gap between my tailgate and bed on the driver's side. The other side also has it, but looks smaller. So they are uneven, is this normal? What causes this to happen?

I noticed that when i was backing up today. After I found that, I went to sit on the passenger side and looked back, the gap on that side is smaller, and not really able to be noticed.

 

I have loaded twice, and one time I put a heavy box on the tailgate while loading, could this be the cause for it?

Take it off and you will see why there is a gap.

 

My gap does not appear like that. I would say I'f in doubt take it to the dealer and ask. Probably something you want to do sooner than later because the more wear and tear you put on the bed the more likely they'll just tell you it's something you caused.

 

My first two didn't have a gap. My current one does because the bed is a bit twisted. The previous owner, among other things, bent the bumper a good three inches, and also had the tailgate down and backed into a pole about 4 inches from the drivers' side edge.

It'll be that way as long as the truck has this bed on it

 

I have actually bumped into something 2 months ago when I was backing up... But did't hit that hard, there is no damage on the bumper and it doesn't look like it got twisted. So could this be the cause of it? Is this kind of problem common? And is it fixable?

I don't know if 'fixable' is the right word. On mine at least, fixing it would entail a new box. That's more replacing than fixing. I don't know how it went down when you bumped whatever it was, but I've had a lot of vehicles in my life. It don't take much impact or force at all to twist metal up some times, it just takes a 'just right' thing to happen.

Basically, it looks to me like you got really lucky and...well, when you bumped it, you hit the beds' funnybone and twisted it up some.

Annoying since you can't un-see it, but it doesn't appear to be bad enough in the pictures to impede your using the bed/tailgate at all?

There is no any problem opening or closing the tailgate, it works fine, and it doesn't seem like being loose or anything.

 

just another QC problem with our trucks. mine has it to. Grrrrrrrrrrr!!

 

It is entirely possible that whatever you hit, the bed got slightly twisted, causing the gap on the tail gate.

My gate doesn't look like yours at all.

 

I got this seal, and I can't figure out how/where to put it on to actually get it to seal.

 

Hi. I also noticed that the gap between cab and bed on the driver's side is slightly larger than the passenger side. Is that also because the bed got twisted? Is this a really big problem? I am so worried about it..
