Not really. The bearings may go bad and you'll get some play in the shaft but that will only lead to poor boost performance. Maybe lose some blades as a worse case scenario which actually can be bad if they get sucked into your engine. But this is a pretty simple fix; sell the turbo on ebay/Craigslist and buy a decent ball bearing turbo :notsure:

    I disagree with that statement.
It is fast. You don't need to do anything to make it go fast. They are crazy fast, straight off the lot.

Seriously though, "fast" is a matter of your personal perspective. Its a helovalot faster than, for example, a moped. Or a bicycle. Or a public transit bus. Or an 18 wheeler. Or ANY soviet ground vehicle. Any pickup older than mid 90's. Many pickups older than mid-2000's.

Buy a reputable turbo, IC, etc... The hardest part is getting a custom manifold to fit the motor. The kit isn't new and has been tried and proven in Australia. If op wants more power, that's the way to do it.

What about re-gearing the rear end to really short gears? Highway cruise performance would suffer but it would be faster around town.

I'd really like to get my hands on an R156F -- if anybody knows of one that's been, crashed? Let me know about it. They have a slightly wider gear spread than the R155, starting at 4.3:1. That means that 1st and 2nd are a bit shorter than previous years. Combine that with a higher range 5th that I've sourced, and it'll turn into something really special with a 0.69:1 overdrive. Give some short city gears, and tall and efficient highway ;)

True, it is all a matter of perspective. I was just going off of the OP's vibe, it sounded like he was hoping for something that the 2.7l is not, relative to what he wants out of it.

But what is universal about the 2.7l is its reliability and durability, and I think that's something to take pride in with the 4 bangin Tacos

You could spend $1500 on a cheapo crotch rocket that would embarrass $40k muscle cars... Of course that's assuming you want to/ know how to ride said crotch rocket...
