I am about to take the plunge on a new Tacoma. I have decided to get the 2.7l but need help deciding on the MT vs auto. Wondered how people like the new 6 speed with the 4.3 ratio. I have always driven a manual but curious about people's thoughts. Only interested in hearing from 2.7 owners and not get into a debate about auto vs manual. Just which transmission meshes best with the truck. Appreciate all feedback

I just bought a 2.7 manual utility package. The transmission shifts great, although I'm having the same problem as other with a harmonic vibe between like 2100-2500 rpm. I'd hold off buying until toyota can fix the problem. But to answer your question the manual transmission is awesome, although I'm bias as I've always driven manual as well. These new automatics supposedly get ya better fuel economy though. I think it's all personal preference. Drive what you like!

I have the Auto with the 2.7 and it works fine. Also no vibrations smooth as can be. In the beginning the auto transmission will tend to shift more as it "learns" the drivers driving style. After 1000-1500 miles it will be much better. I have 7000 on my truck now and it shifts just fine. The only complaint is when cruise control is on, it tends to downshift quite a bit on shallow inclines. But when cruise is off it drives just fine. This is pretty typical of cruise control units as they are very agressive and trying to maintain speed exactly.

Manual transmission, mine is a 5 speed and It makes the 4 banger feel so much better, you can decide how much power you want whenever you want!

I have the auto transmission. No vibrations, no hood flutter, no "howling", no problems shifting out of reverse or gear slippage between 2nd and 3rd, and no excessive gear hunting. In short, no problems at all and I am completely happy with the purchase.

Your decision however really depends on what you are expecting from the truck. Are you a manual guy who has always enjoyed manual transmission? Are you buying a 4x or a 2x? what benefit are you hoping the manual transmission would bring? Only you really know what driving experience you want from the truck.

    Have fun!

I can do the same with mine in manual shift mode. Was tooling around town yesterday trying the manual shift out. Had the a/c on as it hit 77 here yesterday. Best a/c I have ever had in a truck.

The ac is great in mine too! I just love driving a stick and can't ever see myself owning a automatic unless my left leg quits working!

The auto is fine in mine and it's definitely relaxing to not have to think about shifting. I do wish they offered the manual in double cab 2.7L though as I prefer rowing my own gears.

Or you develop a bad left knee. The pain finally won out and I had to give up driving manuals back in 2007. Doctor was surprised I lasted that long. Tore my knee up working on a inland towboat back in 1995.

Sorry OP I'll l let the thread get back on subject.

I'm only 25 and will be 26 this August so hopefully my knee lasts a while longer LOL!

Before i make an ass of myself, I am unsure if they have made any adjustments to the clutch between my truck (2010) and the 2016's. If they have, then everything im typing becomes irrelevant.

From my experience, i love my 2.7 5 speed, I dont tow anything big, and i dont race this thing around, so I never had the need for any more power or acceleration. That being said, the stock clutch is underdesigned for some of the tacoma applications. I have the heaviest version of the truck that Toyota put the 5 speed in, (4x4 access cab), and i had to replace the clutch within the first year of owning it. There is a TSB out there to cover this, if you are under 36,000, however I was driving for work the entire first year and put 40,000 worth of freeway 5th gear miles on, so Toyota wouldnt cover it. When i took it apart there was no hot spots, no burnt material, but the fingers on the clutch were all bent out to varying degrees.

I know people are going to assume that i was abusing it, but i am sure that i wasnt (backed up by the fact that toyota actually released a TSB for a clutch). The clutch was just not strong enough for the weight and application. I first started noticing it on very cold winter days when entering the freeway, made the shift from 3-4, and when i hit the accelerator my tach started outrunning my wheels.

That being said, i love this truck, and would not want the auto for the 2.7, but keep an eye on that clutch. I am now in the market for a 3rd gen (married with kids coming, so bye bye access cab) and have been scared off of getting the manual, even though i am dreading the boredom of the auto.

Manual is $1500 cheaper. But only available in 4x4 AC. Never driven the auto to compare, but the manual is a nice truck type transmission.

Thanks for all the replies... I am actually buying this truck as a third vehicle. I do a lot of fishing adventures and need a good rig to take me all over oregon. I like a manual but really doesn't matter much to me. I just know in years past the auto with the 4 cylinder makes it a complete dog and was curious if the new auto eliminated the discrepancy in perceived power. Thanks again for the responses. And the model i am looking at is AC 4x4.

You wont regret the 4 banger man, the damn motor is bulletproof especially if your gonna use it for what you said it should last forever!!!!
