Poll: Do you experience a clunk?

Hey everyone!!

I have been having this weird clunk sound in my steering column and its been driving me crazy. It happens whenever I go over a bump or pothole or any change in immediate road elevation. I then researched and found out that a few other people have this clunk in their truck too.... It sounds like plastic hitting plastic in the steering column.

I talked to chris 4x4 and he's had his truck apart a bunch of times trying to find it... So maybe we can get a poll going to learn more about the clunk and to see how many tacomas have it, and maybe get a tsb out for it.

Please pick all answers that apply. Please provide us with info about your truck, and when you experience the noise.

 

I get a clunk when going in reverse then steppin on the brake or turning while backing up. thats the only time I get it.

 

my 09 reg cab 4x4 had this problem, if i hit a bump hard it made a sound similar to a clicking strut. but it seemed to be coming from the column

 

I have the clunk to but it sounds to me like it is coming from the front suspension. I have a leveling kit on there and a guy with a Tundra asked me yesterday if I experienced the clunk, he has the same set up.

 

I had the clunk. After I installed coilovers and took my truck wheeling over the 4th of July I had a clunk on the following Monday. It was on the front passenger side. I tried everything to find it. I could never pinpoint the source. I took the coilovers off and went back to spacers. The clunk is gone.

 

I've had two clunk issues. I figured out that one of them was the passenger side mud flap hitting speed bumps. Now I just make sure I go over them slower or at an angle. The other clunk is in the steering wheel when I am off road. I believe it is play in the intermediate steering shaft that connects the column to the rack and pinion. I believe this is normal, but I have not confirmed my diagnosis. Since it only happens off road I'm not too concerned.

 

Have it in my 09 and the other 2 trucks I test drove had the exact same noise/feeling. Only happens offroad on somewhat rough areas. Seems to be in the steering as well

Timely thread......Yesterday I noticed the "clunk" in my steering when turning left.Went on a deserted road and when weaving back and forth I could feel it and hear it.I'll be watching this discussion.

No clunk.

 

No not when the wheels loose traction at all. Can me on a bumpy road and while riding over the small bumps it feels like its in the steering. You can feel it in the steering wheel.

 

Thanks for all the posts! I noticed the clunk more so right after I had gone off on a trail and hit a rather large (I mean large) pothole at 30 +mph... After that I had the clunk since then...

I wonder if there could be a loose component in the contents behind the steering wheel cover (i mean where the air bag deploys)? I don't even know if there is anything else behind that?
