Some people decide its a good idea to bust the screen out of the reservoir instead of clean it properly, maybe thats what happened, idk. The screen is posed to be at the very bottom of the reservoir, you're positive its not down in there? You wouldn't see it by just poppin the cap and looking in, unless there was no fluid, then you could see it...

Not that I could see. I pried back the tabs and took off the top, there was a round piece of metal in there but no screen to be found. In th emiddle you can see straight through the whole unit. If there were a screen underneath the metal piece I don't see how fluid would even work its way in there. Although I did not pry up the metal insert since it was in there pretty good. Maybe if I get curious enough Ill dismantle it all again while putting the inline in place.

Just got the truck a few weeks ago, as far as I can tell everything seems like it is original parts, but then again the reservoir doesn't have any markings on it that I recall. My reservoir looks just like this one.

Yeah thats a stock unit. Your description threw me off cause you shouldn't have been able to dismantle the reservoir. But since you had it off you would have seen the white plastic screen at the bottom. The screen is as big around as the res is.

This is why I was so baffled once the top was taken off. There was no marring of marks that showed any sign of it had been opened up before either. The screen appears to large to have been pushed through as well. Can't seem to find an OEM replacement either. Not sure if the inline will be enough.

Im still confused by your description of dismantling the res and prying tabs back and such. It should be one piece, just a cap and solid reservoir with a bracket attached to the bottom with 3 holes for it to bolt to the pump.

The screen isnt replacable thats why you havent found one, it would be part of the res itself, so youd have to buy a whole new res to get the screen back.

Basically if you flip it upside down along the rim there are 6-8 tabs that can be pried open with a flathead screwdriver. Found out how to do it here https://youtu.be/7u6za7NxUJU

Hu, good to know! I had no idea you could do that. Well you definitely dont have a screen then, lol! It would have been very obvious. It is infact very strange that there were no signs of the screen in there. I wonder if some units didnt come with it in there??

Im kinda suprised it can be taken apart and not have it leak once put back to use again.

Tis' a Mystery to me. We will see how this inline one does. cost of a new reservoir is a bit pricey.

As long as it dosent restrict flow it should work good for ya i suppose.
Now that i see you can dismantle the res iam suprised those screens arent replacable like you thought.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Check your pulleys and idlers. My wife's '98 Ford Explorer had this problem, I put 3 different power steering pumps in it before I discovered there was a worn out idler that was the problem. Sounded exactly the same as a bad P/S pump.

When you say idlers do you mean to replace all of the pulleys? How would I go about seeing if they are all okay? Im pretty new to working on trucks so any additional info is useful.

Take off the belts and spin the pulleys by hand, they should spin free with a little resistance and not make noise. If they spin too loosely you can always clean and repack them w/ bearing grease. If they shift left to right they should be replaced. I've never had to buy new pulleys and have always gotten away with cleaning and repacking w/ new grease.

What I have noticed when I changed the pump was that the pulley on the power steering pump does't fit snug and has some wiggle to it before it is tightened by the nut. Would this have anything to do with it? This is the style pump I installed same as one that was on there previously. pump.jpg
