That's what I did. I'm grounded off of the hood and off the driver wheel well.

 

Use 1" bonding strap to ground the hood to the body and see what that changes. Though, at stock radio wattage 1.8to1 SWR is completely ok.

 

I run a roof mount antenna mounted to an aluminum puck to spread the antenna load. It is a steel whip so it handles the trees well. I was able to get a flat 40 channel tune at 1.1to1 SWR. Siro 5000 performer, they can be hard to come by though.

 

Brian you ready to HAM yet? I am kind of itching to take the class and get my license.

So what is the difference between a regular CB and a HAM radio?

 

Frequency range and licensing. The radio quality is way higher and with the proper setup can net longer ranges legally. Ability to send digital information. Call signs and other rules that help to keep the airwaves clearer.

CB is kinda a free for all. No regulation unless you are doing something really, really destructive/stupid.

 

I'm still not to keen on getting rid of my current setups to run HAM. @Gramps I would have to get Crissy licensed also as CB is our primary communication when is different cars. I hate the rules that come along with communications on those bands.

Only if everyone in your group makes the commitment to get the license. Otherwise, in the 4wd community it is just elitist hardware. I have not made the jump yet as CB is what almost all want to spend the money on 4wheeling. A truck mount 2m setup is going to run around $500 and most will not pony up the cash. A handheld can be cheaper but suffers range issues inside the cab of a vehicle.

Yeah I guess it is kind of pointless when not everyone has a HAM in the group. That's quite a bit to spend on a radio setup.

 

@TacoVio yup Brian @thefatkid is the guy that help me with the advise on getting my CB working right. With a ground wire like this. I'm using two.

 

I have no issues spending that kind of money on a radio setup. My issue comes from the less then 5% of the people that I 4wheel with even express interest in getting the license because most CB is sub 90$ combined. I'd rather run 2m and lose the skip and riff raff.

I would also have to ditch my current radios, they are not quite type accepted.

 

Looks like a good unit, where are you going to mount it?

 

How well does yours work being mounted to your front bumper? That's where I would want to put my antenna

I agree with not enough of my group typically has it, but it was that way until the first guys got cb too. Someone has to be first

 

For all of you guys with the cobra 75, if you could go back would you buy it again? Is it good enough, or would you buy a full-size unit?
