Alright lets see who's got the knowledge.
I'm converting my 2wd pre runner to 4wd.
One of the last few obstacles I'm having is the speed sensor.

On my 2wd tranny I see it is located at the tail housing.

The J-Shift Tcase I got has some sort of plug with an O-ring where I thought the speed sensor would be. But no sensor! Just a plug with O ring that looks like a speed sensor.

How do I know if a mechanical sensor is supposed to go in there or not?
Why is there no sensor in there?! I think its off a 4runner which would make sense because 4runners use ABS for the speed sensor?

    Thanks

    I have the a340E converting to a340F.
    So automatic for 6 cylinder.
Yeah I saw that post so I'm guessing its gonna be at the Tcase.
But like I said my Tcase has this plug like filling the sensor hole.

I'm not sure if its an electronic sensor that goes in there or mechanical. According to your picture it seems like a combo? A mechanical shaft with an electric sensor on top.
I can prob take a pic later today

I gotta go home and check my tranny extension. I think that also has a hole?
On your FSM pictures I see there are 2 VSS locations. The one thats not at the Tcase is unclear of the location

Yeah you'll have to purchase a new sensor and there should be a plug for it hanging off the transfer case. Unscrew the cap and the sensor goes in there. That's what I did. I had to extend the wires

Picture #2 you can see it's right next to where the front of your rear driveshaft connects.

Okay. What kind of speed sensor is it? I'm having a hard time with that because I see some are mechanical and some are not.
Also, Why would i use the plug off of the transfer case to connect it. Since my transfer case isn't connected to anything else.
Are you saying I should splice the plug from the transfer case to my existing wires?

On the last picture is that sensor connected at the transmission extension. Where the t case and tranny connect.

Its a mechanical sensor but it has an electronic plug... if that makes sense if you don't get it you'll get a Speed sensor code and your speedo will not work. Below is what it looks like.

If you run larger tires now is the time to order a different gear with a different number of teeth. You do have to purchase both the sensor and the gear. Cant remember what the stock tooth number is but I believe I order a 27 tooth and it was perfect for my 33x1350s.
