I searched and didn't find anything about a 2nd gen rear end swap.

I picked up a TRD locker and im going to put it in my non TRD prerunner.

So, has anyone done this and posted about it?

I'm making sure to gather all the parts I need before I dive into it.
specifically there is a second plug on the new rear that my truck doesn't seem to have. That plug is for the locker(it's 7 pin/black) :) I read something about a 1st gen needing a wire from around the tranny back to the rear and a computer module.. not sure??
and also there is some kind of vaccuum line or breather for the locker unit and it went up to a crossmember(that I don't have)..couldn't get to see where it ended, some plastic piece into the frame then I dunno? if it was the breather then it probly just ended there.
anyways I have the switch and I found the connector in my dash for it, just need to track it down to the rear.

    thanx

If you have a donor truck then pull the 4wd computer and swap it with yours. The offroad 4wd computer is different than the non offroad one (controls the e-locker). Pull the wire harness that runs to the e-locker as well. It's tied into the harness that runs to the fuel pump. You'll need to separate the e-locker harness from the fuel pump one.

The tube you have marked is a breather tube. It terminates at the cross member where you pulled it. You can can do whatever you want with it. I have mine routed up near the fuel filler area.

oh awesome!!! all.on.black is here !!!!
great write up on this
I'll grab them parts and update when I dive into this.
oh , question on the axle shafts and brake assemblies you took off. did you re use them on the locking rear end? or just easier to move stuff around that way? I was hoping to use my brake parts ,I assume the shafts are different from my non trd rear and the trd one.
    thanx

All of the axle shaft are interchangeable between the V6 models (minus the X Runner, it could be the same shafts but they are a 5 bolt pattern hubs). I am not 100% sure on the I4 since it has 4.10 gears. All of the 8.4" diff, open (which you have) or lsd and the 8" diffs have the same axle shafts. I decided to use my axle shafts because I did not want to unhook the e-brake cables. I am lazy like that :) It is not too difficult of a swap. If you run into any problems feel free to pm me or post here.

so I went and looked around my truck. hooked up the locker switch and it lights up. checked for the black connector by the kickpanel driver side, its there..
so Do I need to get the 4wd ecu from the donor truck?
Im about to open up behind the glove box and check, but If I have the plug...it should be there?
I still have to aquire the wire harness from that black plug to the locker.
The guy I bought it from will be removing it, any helpfull hints on how to get it?

    thanx again

You should have the plug for the 4wd ecu. You'll need to pull it out from the other truck. It should say 4wd ecu and should be colored red. It's located behind and above the glove box

As far as pulling the wiring for the locker. You need to drop the fuel tank to get to all of it. Pull the wiring out of the wire loom and separate the locker wires from the fuel pump. You should be able to separate them easily without them being all tangled up. Get a smaller wire loom or use the same one and install on your truck.

Why not just energize the servo on the locker with 12v hooked to a switch?

Okay so this write up is basically you putting in a rear locker in a regular prerunner? I'm just trying to get my facts straight since I have been thinking about this myself. Can't wait to see how it turns out good luck!

I believe your truck may lack some of the wiring, but good luck.

I think it would be more enjoyable with just a switch. You lose a little 'safety' features that are probably associated with the ECU when you engage it, but it would work in theory and you would have greater control over it. Just my .02

Its only missing the wiring from the kick panel to the locker; which he is getting from the donor truck that he got the rear locker from. I have already done the swap and all the wiring is there except from the kick panel to the locker.

any updates? I was curious how much different would this be if instead of a prerunner it was a SR5 4WD? I'm sure I'd have the pick up the rear end from 4wd Offroad... plus wiring etc.. would I need a different ECU? I was also thinking of the LSD from a Sport?

    no work done yet.
I think yours being a 4wd it already has the ECU and all the plugs.
you would just need the switch and wires to the locker.
the LSD would pop right in.
