Poll: How many of you all actually use the GoPro mount?

Just curious how many 3rd Gen's actually use the GoPro mount. I went out and bought a GoPro camera just before I bought the truck. I like the idea and have used it a couple of times, but am not as "enthusiastic" about it as I was originally...primarily because I'm a little disappointed with the GoPro battery, responsiveness, picture, etc.

I have a GoPro but will most likely never use it in my truck.

 

It's not the most exciting angle, but it's a good working shot. I used it quite a bit on my recent trip to Death Valley. If I had two GoPro's I would probably mount one in various places on the exterior for more interesting shots and cut between that and the more "documentary" shot from the factory mount. It can also be used to capture the inside of the cab, but I have not tried that yet. (I have the Hero 3+ if that's relevant to anyone)


A couple tips:
* I need to get power routed up there. I use it with the phone app so I can control the camera without physically pressing buttons on the camera. The app also provides a live-view that helps with framing the shot. However, the communication with the app is wi-fi based and that plus video capture sucks down the battery. I have three batteries and I used all three up all three days of the trip.

* With the waterproof case the sound levels are low except for low frequency noise. I found it unusable as-is, and the only real go-pro audio I used in the video below required processing (low-cut filtering mostly) to be acceptable for even my amature work. After reviewing the footage the first night and hearing the audio, I switched to a frame mount like the link below and got better results for audio. It may have also improved video since it didn't have the extra layer of glass like the waterproof case (note: I did not try the skeleton case since I didn't have one with me).

Here's Day 1 of my Death Valley trip, a good percentage of it is footage taken from the factory mount mixed with handheld shots when not in the truck. It should give you an idea of how you can use the factory setup to help tell a story.

I like that the fish eye of the action camera gets a better video of whats happening on the trail than my dash camera which is mounted on my mirror.

I'm tempted to mount it outside but when I'm on a trail with other guys there's no time to get out and keep switching angles and settings so the mount makes sense.

It's a gimmick but I like it

I don`t have one but I may consider one in the future.

 

I use mine as a dash cam. I also LEAVE the skeleton mount in the Taco mounted. It is so much easier just popping out the camera. I use the wifi and go pro app to control it.

 

i bought some mounts off ebay so i could put my phone up there to record if i feel like it.

 

Anyone can put a gopro mount on their windshield. Where Toyota didn't think this all the way through was that they should have put a USB port in the back of the rearview mirror. That would have made it more exciting.

 

I'm right there with you. But that might have cost $5 in wires and connectors vs. just sticking a plastic mount on with VHB tape for $0.50.

I think there's an opportunity for someone to come up with a clean and easily installed mod to add power up there. Folks would want that power for dash cams and radar detectors also.

 

Put a Papa Go Dash cam into the Go Pro mount instead

 

Mostly plan on using mine as a dash cam , but will take it when I off road from time to time as well.

 

I like it. It's not a big deal. I don't understand why so many people hate it. You don't even notice the mount if you're not using it

 

I use my mount for a GoPro Hero4 (silver). I cut a foam material bottle cooler off to be the same size as the GP and simply slip it up and over the unit when I exit the truck. With the tinted windows it is barely visible from the outside and the cover keeps it from getting hot on a sunny day. I set the camera to "looping" and simply engage "quick capture" when I start rolling and disengage it and turn the GP off when I leave the truck.

 

I can imagine how incredibly boring it would be watching the go-pro videos. Probably even worse than watching Aunt Phoebe's Hawaiian vacation videos, or maybe even a NASCAR race.

 

I did the same thing, since I couldn't get the truck yet, but I could get my camera ready to go! I haven't recorded a single video on it yet!!!

 

anyone figured out how to use the mount for a radar detector?

 

Always.

I used it to mount my dash cam in stead of the suction cup mount.
