Quick question, I would like to activate the backup camera via a switch to use while pulling a trailer or launching/retrieving a boat, etc., without disabling the auto reverse function.

Is this possible? And, is it easy enough for a novice mechanic to tackle this project? Can anyone help point me in the direction of some detailed instructions? I have a 2016 TRD OR DB SB 4x4 MT.

Sorry if there is already a thread that explains this... if so, please let me know where so I can go find it. I thought I had read it somewhere, but I can't seem to find it again.

Thanks in advance for the help!

An SPDT switch would be the easiest method. I imagine if you googled SPDT backup camera you could have it figured out in a few minutes. Should not be hard at all once you locate the camera's trigger wire.

I would vote a big no. This system is actually half intelligent. I was starting to tell it to call someone and when I put it into reverse it stopped the call from going out and flipped to the back up camera. I couldn't over rid it until I went into drive.

It basically forces you to pay attention to backing up. I still turn around regardless of a camera because they never will replace good old fashion responsible driving.

What I got from it what if you do figure a way force it on all the other features will shut down in the Entune unit. Besides there is no button option for you to turn it on if it wanted to have it on while driving on the screen. You would have to force it with a mechanical switch by faking the system that you put it into reverse. Which would likely trigger all sorts of lights and warning if you where in drive and it gets told you fired it into reverse.

    /my 2 cents

That makes a valid point, but i would say that is all wired in with the sensors and relays of the tranny as well. I put an aftermarket one in mine with an aftermarket unit and just had to tap into the power source of when my reverse light come on. I know my system, and the factory one is two completely different concepts, but they are still one in the same. The camera just needs power to come on, i dnt think it much matters where the power comes from. But i could be wrong, not saying that your wrong either, just sqying that power is power to something that needs power.

If you had an automatic you could just flip it in reverse while driving, does nothing but scare the shit out of the people behind you lol

I have towed with the truck and the cameras angle sucks for seeing where your trailer is so I don't see any benifit of having it on full time. Just stick to the old fashion mirrors. F550 box truck and 30ft trailer through seattle and no problems yet.

I agree, this makes sense. I didn't consider this factor when thinking about this MOD. I'd still like to play around with the idea and see if I can figure something out. It's not a mandatory fix, but I would really like to have this option during certain scenarios.

Thank you for your input! Very much appreciated!

This has been done on the 2nd gen, so that's probably the closest example. A search should turn it up. If I remember correctly, it will turn off after 5 minutes even if you force it on (again, on the 2nd gen, I don't think anyone knows how the 3rd gen will respond).

Its a save the trans feature, just dont let the speed drop below about 10 mph or it will lock in reverse. You can actually throw an auto in park at speed and you will hear the parking cam pawl click, but don't let the speed fall or it will lock up in park as well.
