I think I've read on here that even the 'chrome' bumpers are plastic.

I didn't know it was plastic until I waxed it earlier today. I thought it was just painted.

Just wait in about 2 minutes the Fanboys will be here to explain to you why that plastic chrome is better than metal chrome the same way they tell you that drum brakes are better than disc too ha ha.

I thought I remember someone saying backup sensors required the painted bumper. That was months ago and apparently false. Sorry, my bad.

Just another way Toyota saved some money. Only plus is because they are all plastic caps if you damage one you can replace just the insert and not need to purchase an entire bumper. The support bar behind that is one piece. So if that gets hit hard enough you'll have to replace that.

Welcome to the world of weight reduction to try and increase fuel economy and make repairs easier / cheaper.

FWIW I have a walnut sized dimple and twist in the corner of my first gen chrome steel bumper. Was quoted the OEM replacement bumper from a reputable body shop I've used in the past would be $600 and they won't even try and twist it back into shape because it IS chrome. Dimple and twist will remain, it's not worth the effort and expense to repair. If it were on my 2016 I'd just need to replace the corner cover.

Steel bumpers are disappearing on all sorts of vehicles so get used to it. You want steel, go aftermarket.
