Why'd you buy your Sport 4x4 instead of OR ?

In my opinion you did not buy a lesser truck, just a different truck than perhaps the intended use you had in mind. In my case, I did my research and purposely bought the 2016 DBCB TRD Sport because it rides differently on the highway. It has road tuned suspension and 17" wheels so it is more "sporty" if you will on winding roads etc. I bought my truck to haul my A-Liner camper into BLM and forest service roads etc. because I like remote camping. I am never going to be a rock crawler. But I will need the 4L etc when I pull my TT into these backwoods locations. I love my TRD Sport because it is configured perfectly for my intended use. Plus it looks cool in my opinion.

Unlike the majority of Tacoma buyers I bought an access cab, having no need for an double cab, and that being a AC Sport 4x4 with manual transmission. First criteria was fitting it in my garage. Leaving it outside in the hot sun or in freezing temperatures is a no-option to me. The big three's trucks, in a extended cab configuration are too wide and too long. And I wanted a manual so by default I had to get the Sport. IMO, the manual eliminates the need for crawl control, so basically other than cosmetics all it lacks is the locking differential and the more aggressive tires of the OR. But this truck will see 99.5% pavement while I own it so the it was the better choice for me. If the OR was offered in a AC with MT, I would have bought that.

Purchased the sport instead of the OR because I demanded a manual transmission in a double cab. I knew I didn't want the automatic if I was spending so much in a truck.

Long story short, when I'm ready for a lift and some other mods, I'll throw in a locker as well.

The Off Road is a better value up-front than the Sport. But, I don't want to put up with an Off Road tuned vehicle for the next 10 years or more. The clunky crawl control sounds like headaches down the road not to mention the constant feel of the off road tuned suspension. As it is, I will be looking for reasons to put this sport into 4x4 just to keep the axles lubed. I will have this truck for 10 years so, over a 10 year period of time spent 99% on the road (get real with yourself) and after 100 thousand miles I need "sport" tuned suspension. I will be happier with the sport, extra re-sale value if any, be dammed.

The Sport always had the connotation of the cheapness in the word. Sorta like the Jeep Sport.
TRD Sport. Do not like the name.

If you were in hard core rock climbing competitions you wouldn't be using a new Tacoma with IFS and a weak electronic locker IMO.

I got my sport because I needed to have at least a 6 ft bed and the off road didn't come with that option. Other than that I like the looks of the sport colored matched bumpers flares and door handles, and the hood scoop.

Whether or not your a "hard core" off-roader is negligible. The off-road price is close enough to the sport that it makes financial sense to just buy the off-road with all of it's goodies.

Personally, when I test drove the sport, I almost changed my mind about buying a Tacoma because I could barely see anything over the hood. That changed when I saw the off-road. If the hood scoop had any function like for an inter cooler or an intake, that maybe would have changed my mind.

It doesn´t make ¨financial sense¨ if you want the looks of the Sport(painted flares, scoop) and if you will never use the ¨goodies¨ the OR has that the sport doesn't. You are right, price wise they are close, but it really comes down to what you use it for and the looks. I am choosing the sport because I have no need for the locker or crawl control, and I prefer the painted fender flares, so that makes more financial sense to me. And please don´t come back with, what about resale value. I am not buying a truck for the next person, I am buying for myself and plan to have it for at least 12 years, so I don´t care about resale value.

Haha okay. I guess with a black truck, you don't notice the fender flares as much. But I guess for me, paying ~35k+ for a midsize pickup truck, I wanted to get all I could with money. However, I did not want the hood scoop. I can see if you want the hood scoop, the 17in wheels(I think), and color matched fender flares and bumper, it does make "financial sense" to just buy the sport. I just really wanted a locker. My landcruisers(2002 and 2013) came standard and have saved my butt quite a few times. They really add to the versatility of a 4wd. But to each his own. I'm sorry if I offended anyone but I don't think that would be the first on an online forum!!

I think for a lot of people, it's a love/hate decision on the fender flares. I don't like the black. If the OR came from the factory with a body side color option, more people might opt for the OR over the sport.

Exactly, with a black truck, I like the look of the "matte" finish of the black fender flares. I could have bought a white off-road but wasn't really happy with that look.

Yeah, personally I think the unpainted flairs look on trucks looks cheap.

Well for me the OR is the way to go. I do not do a lot of off rode. However there are times that I have to deal with a lot of snow. The sport would more than meet my needs. I currently own a 06 sport and it has more than satisfied my needs. I am going with the OR this time. I plan on taking a trip cross country and will be hitting some off-road trails. I don't think either truck is more superior than the other. It just comes down to individual taste

I wanted a Sport until I drove both a Sport and the OR and decided I really didn't like the scoop.
