i found the truck I wanted and it is in CO, so I'm flying out there and driving it back, all 17 hours of it. Looking forward it a lot, even though it will be by myself, should be fun.

Question though, what do I have to do to get it registered in CA? I don't need to get it smog certified since it's a 50 state emissions car right?

    Anyone done this recently??

    Thanks!

I don't believe you will have to smog it but you may have to get it inspected to verify it's 50 state compliant.

You will probably have to pay taxes on it. Idk what Colorado sales taxes are, if any, but they may or may not credit you that amount. I've read where sometimes they honor tye amount of tax paid to another state, but I've also read where someone had to pay the full CA rate.

The CO dealer is charging me CA sales tax rate and I think they are paying for DMV registration too for CA, but I need to call them tomorrow to clear that part up

My truck is being bought in Oregon and I will be driving it back. From what I have found you will pay sales tax in Colorado and when you get back to Cali you will need to pay the difference in sales tax to the dmv. You will also need a smog and to have the truck weighed. Then you can register the truck. There's a few hoops but it seems like it's worth the hassle to get the right deal.

I am buying and driving back from Arizona. I have not heard of having the truck weighed from any sources I have talked to, are you sure?

I have been told I will need a smog check (any station is ok), VIN verification (this can be done at AAA, DMV, or by any CHP/peace officer) and then go to DMV to complete/pay for registration. If the state you are buying in collects tax and it is less than your CA County tax, you make up the difference when you go to the DMV to register.

If the dealer collects CA tax and registration fees then they should collect it from you (or roll it into the loan) and write you a check for the amount. Then you bring that check when you go to the DMV.

Another user that actually went through the process was private messaging with me. Here are some bullet points and a dmv link.

kind of tedious since i was winging it.

    couple bullet points:

-make sure the dealer adds CA tax into your price
-get the truck weighed and smogged BEFORE trying to register it (it'll save you time and effort)
-put pretax sale price of just the truck (no warranty) on the DMV form or else the math will be off
-be prepared to spend ~800$ on registration (that's how much it was for me)

this is the site i used to find a certified weigh station:
    https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/dms/programs/wm/licensedlocations/activelocationslisting.html

I am still really confused as to weighing the vehicle. Nobody has mentioned this to me, either the credit union or AAA. Is there any reference piece of information from the DMV that states the vehicle needs to be weighed?

The only place I see gross vehicle weight mentioned is on REG 31 (VIN Verification). But I have been told AAA or any peace officer can complete this form....

Not to mention the $800 registration fee makes no sense either, that is really high.

EDIT: Was @killthehippies intending to use his Tacoma as a commercial vehicle?

EDIT 2: This is all I could find. Since the Tacoma has an unladen weight of less than 6000 lbs, if your temporary out of state registration (which you need to drive it back) shows the empty/unladen weight, should you be good to go without going to a weigh station?

    "
Commercial motor vehicles (vehicles designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property or used or maintained for the transportation of persons for hire, compensation, or profit) that weigh:
    • Over 6,001 pounds unladen (empty) require a Declaration of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)/Combined Gross Vehicle Weight (CGW) (REG 4008) form (PDF). For more information, see the Registering Commercial Vehicles and PTI Trailers (FFVR 27) Fast Facts brochure..
    • 10,000 pounds or less unladen also require a California public weighmaster's certificate. To find a public scale, check your telephone directory or visit the California Department of Food and Agriculture website.
A weighmaster's certificate is not required for:
      • Autos (unless registered as commercial vehicles).
      • Motorcycles.
      • Trailers.
      • Commercial vehicles:
        • If a prior California registration shows the unladen weight, and the vehicle's weight has not been altered.
        • With an unladen weight of 6,000 pounds or less when the out-of-state title or registration shows empty, unladen, scale, tare, or WT/Wheels weight.
        • Two or three-axle trucks weighing 10,001 pounds or more. The estimated weight must be entered on the REG 343.

I imagine the weight is a a registration fee issue. I know HD trucks pay a lot higher rate for yearly registration and it's based on weight of the vehicle.

I pick mine up this week. I will probably get the weight certification done just to be safe (rather be out 10-15 bucks than take the chance of getting turned away at the DMV).

I'll report back exactly what my experience was with getting the registration completed the following week.

Sounds good. Thanks for your help. I'm interested to see what it ends up costing you in fees as well

I looked on the CADMV site and it says smog is only needed if the car is a 49state emissions car. Tacos are 50 state emissions cars. I also talked to the dealer today, and although they may not be 100% right, they did tell me they are submitting all the title paperwork for CA registration and that I won't need to do anything once I get home... Really hope that is the case... I'm going to call the DMV tomorrow as well since I saw a hotline listed to see if they think that can even be done. Will keep you guys posted.

They also sent me pics of my taco today, made me so excited to see it!!
