After reading it again my other guess would be a worn ignition switch.

I agree with DanielTaco.. Hey, what if that damned clutch switch is just intermmitent/defective. You'll sure find out quick if you try the clutch start cancel as suggested above.
I would also try this (in Neutral, clutch cancel not activated): while you have the key in the "start" position, release and depress the clutch a coupla times.
Yeah, if something is broke it'll be fixed under warranty anyway - but I'm the kind of nutjob who just has to know lol

It's also much easier for your service department if you can narrow it down for them. Makes the process a whole lot less painful.

Sounds like it could just be a defective battery cell....

Ah HA! it's the old nonfunctional new alternator in the 2016 Tacoma syndrome.

Thanks for the reply guys. I called the service department and they set me up with a loaner Corolla for a few days. They had to take the truck anyway to put on Glass Coat, and the dealership is an hour away, so I'm hoping they get it all done in one shot. I just hope they get my new truck to be like new again. Or perhaps newer than it was new. Only downside to all this is shooing all the honeys away in this sexy ass Corolla.

One can never have too many light bars.
To be fair the new corolla is pretty spacious. I seem to always get corollas when I take uber and you can definitely fit a few honeys in the back seat.

So I'm guessing the clutch cancel made no difference?

Well... The dealership called today. They said they identified the problem. Bc I planned on ordering a set of Husky floor mats, I didn't buy the OEM ones. But the salesman gave me a mat to a Camry to use for a few days to keep the carpet cleanish. Turns out, according to the dealership, the floor mat was bunching under the clutch preventing it from going all the way down. I'm sceptical, but if this is in fact the case, then I'm just a dumbass I suppose. We'll see after they bring me back the truck tomorrow.

Is it really cold where you are?
Could be the battery dying from the cold.

    otherwise bring it in

I had the same problem with my TRD off road there was less than 200 mile on the truck. Took it to the dealer, the battery had a bad cell. They replaced it and it has been good starting ever since.

I kinda am too, but maybe.

During tech for SoloII and HPDE events we always had the D/S floormats removed to prevent problems with all 3 pedals. Feet are a bit more active in those events, but the idea is similar.

That makes some sense. I figured it had to do with the clutch, it's a bit stiffer when cold so that in combo with the wrong floor mat certainly could have prevented it from going to the floor. Once you started getting frustrated that it wouldn't start, naturally you would have pushed harder.

But testing this with the clutch cancel like I suggested, would have confirmed or ruled this issue out. Did you try this before you brought it in? Now you'll probably never know if you never tried it!

I put in my new Husky Weatherbeater floor liners today, so there won't be any floor mat excuses tomorrow morning when I go to work.

I didn't try it, but if the problem continues, I will.

I just got my 2016 as well and am having the exact same issue. I am sure I have the clutch fully depressed and am starting the truck correctly but the engine turns over for a while before catching. It does always go on the first try but can take up to 5 seconds or so. Did you get any feedback from the dealer on this? I also get the check charging system error at startup, but I have noticed that I didn't always get this. I only have 800 miles on the truck.

Wow, five seconds is a lot of cranking for sure. Mine always fires up within 1 second or so. I think I'd have that checked.

I've had the "check charging system" warning since day one, it seems to be normal any time the ignition is on but the truck isn't running - ie it's not in fact charging from the alternator. I think of it as a high tech "idiot light" for the charging system.

When she's running, you never see this warning - and I've never had any problems related to a low/dead battery.

    Cheers,

    Frank
