Unable to lock from outside . . .

I have to walk almost a half-mile to work and back from my parking spot. Before I get off, I can drive over to my truck using the "company vehicle." I used to start my car, get outside, disconnect the keyless entry from my key ring, lock it and take the keyless entry with me in order to get back into it after I get off, like 30 minutes. Such an awesome sensation to walk in the freezing cold, and get into a pre-warmed car!
Well, now I have my dream truck and I have run into a problem. You can't lock it from the outside! I tried doing it physically and it automatically unlocks. The keyless doesn't even work on the truck if it's on, so there goes that option.
Does anyone much smarter than me (there should be lots of those) know of a way I can fix this by mod? Anything?

 

Right. That's why I'm trying to figure out how to lock it.

 

Allow me to clarify something. I work on a Nuclear Security Facility, where Manhattan Project was based. We have the world's supply of enriched uranium. (this is all public info, don't worry) It is one of the most secure facilities in this country. I do not fear my vehicle getting stolen at all. I just get the heebee-jeebee's leaving her there all unlocked and open for anyone to peek and side and take something.

 

I keep an extra key in the truck and use it to manually lock door from outside of running vehicle. This also disables the remote locking temporarily.

 

See now there, that's what I'm taking about. Pure genius! Thanks torque for the help. That will come in handy.

 

Long idling after a cold start also maximizes engine wear. When the engine is cold it runs richer because not all of the gasoline vaporizes. The gasoline that does not vaporize washes the lubrication from the cylinder walls as well as contaminating the oil. It's also hard on the cat. You want to start the engine and drive off immediately. (Or as soon as you can clear the windshield and windows.) The extra load on the engine from moving the vehicle gets it up to operating temp a lot quicker.

I went and got a spare key made specifically for locking it when the truck is running.

Just a plain key. Works great.

You are correct though, good sir, about the wear on the engine. I didn't really think 20-30 minutes was a terribly long time to idle compared to hours.

 

A remote starter would do it too but the key is alot cheaper!

 

True. Didn't even cross my mind. Maybe something for the future.
