    It's actually a piece of steel, I think it was a sign at one point. No writing left on it unfortunately.

    I've been down there so many times I'm surprised I never noticed it before. My daughter actually pointed it out. I told her the tree was hungry ;)

    Trees grow outward except at apical meristems right? That's why old fence scars stay the same height off the ground as the tree grows older.....
    But yeah it's pretty damn cool lol

    Seen this picture before. I doubt the tree was chained at ground level as the story goes. Trees grow outward all over but up at tips where there is meristem tissue. If the bike was chained tightly to a very small saplings where it was in the area of meristem cells maybe...
