Switching to h4 to h2

When you switch from h4 to h2 while running there like supposed to have a sound while switching gear?

 

A light 'clunk' possibly. You'll feel the disengage in the seat of your pants and the 4wd light will turn off.

 

Everytime i switch from 2H to 4H it makes a loud "clunk" noise.
Sometimes when i disengage it back to 2H it will make a loud clunk noise also.

I believe this is normal.

 

It should be pretty seamless if you let off the gas before engaging or disengaging. If you are accelerating or in a decent turn while switching it's likely to clunk though.

This. The big one is while turning, that's a good way to get a noise out of it. It is natural for it to not make a noise and just quietly switch over, though.

 

I find the best way is shift into 4hi and click trans into neutral so it engages seamlessly same for going the other way, neutral stops the bind and clunk.

 

Is it necessary to push the clutch in? And is it the same for going from h2 to h4 with the clutch?

 

I have a 14’ RC and it had a clunk going from 2h to 4h on the fly or stopped. I switched to Redline synthetic and now it shifts as smooth as silk. It made a big difference in the front differential also going from 4h to 4 low. No need to use the clutch on the fly from H2 to H4 or H4 to H2. I just let off the gas a little.

 

Good to know i was thinking about switching up from mobil 1 next time. I just traded in my auto for an older manual and put it in 4h and had some issues where 4 low was flashing in 4 hi. But didnt happen a second time. So thought maybe it was because I didn’t depress clutch

 

No need to do much of anything going between 4X2 and 4X4 or back again. It may may take longer to shift if you're accelerating hard. It will shift sooner if you're coasting when making the shift. If you're at a dead stop it may or may not engage until you let the wheels roll some. It works better if the wheels are turning. Sometimes I feel and hear a light bumping sound, sometimes not.

Going from hi range to lo range does require you to shift to neutral, or depress the clutch all the way to the floor. Once again it shifts easier if you are rolling slightly instead of being at a dead stop, no more than 2-3 mph. And I find it works better if I shift from 2hi to 4hi and already be in 4X4 before trying to go to 4 lo. This way the transfer case isn't trying to do 2 things at the same time. You CAN go directly from 2hi to 4lo, I just find it works better doing it one step at a time. Same going back to 2hi from 4lo. I prefer to do it in 2 steps. Going to 4hi from 4lo and then back to 2hi once underway.

And it isn't unusual to be hard to get out of lo range. If it doesn't want to come out put the truck in reverse and back up 10-15', then pull forward 10-15' and try again. I've had to do this dance several times to get out of 4lo.
