Its been around since the mid 2000s. Was carb'd, now EFI. They are not street legal from the factory but they come with a headlight and tail light so you can convert them.

The DRZ can shed about 10lbs after it rolls off the lot but not a whole lot more. Plus its expensive to do power mods to....but really any bike is anymore. I love mine.

The wr450f has been around since 2003. It was carb'd from 2003-2011 i believe. Then in 2012 they switched to EFI. The 2016 wr450f is a redesign. One less valve, more compression, still EFI, and just a little lighter than the previous years. I'm dying to try one out. They are a little more maintenance than a street bike, but they're nothing like the maintenance schedule of a KTM
Thats because they're still made in the right country ;) To hell with all that fancy euro crap

comparing a 2007 wr450f and the 2007 ktm 525 exc the 450 is only a couple pounds lighter. If it can run comparable to the 525 i see it as a viable option.

Drz weighs 40 pounds more then those bikes, it is lighter then my xr though

Tell me about it. Gonna be 2.5k just in performance stuff.

I want to ride a wr as well. Preferably an efi one. Although the carb being easy to adjust in ten minutes is nice

I don't know what its like to ride a light weight 450. I hope it doesn't make me hate the DRZ.

Either will work, the 2007 525 KTM needs some head work to fix the need for frequent valve checks. There's a couple more things to do preemptively if you ride it like a maniac stunter on the street but generally they are very reliable bikes with frequent oil changes. They'll need a piston and cylinder every 300-400 hours depending on how you ride it. I ride a lot on trails and short stints on the street; it's rare I put 100 engine hours on the bike in a season.

There's a reason most people out in the mountains ride KTM's. Their suspension, power, and low weight is worth the maintenance.

That being said KTM's use racing class engines so if maintenance scares you don't buy one; you won't like it.

Yeah dang, im not afraid of the work but that doesn't sound very pleasing. If I bought one. What exactly would need to be done right away?

I rode the 500exc. Wasn't too impressed with it being "lighter"

I'm thinking a lighter battery and headlight might make my bike feel just a tiny bit less tippy.

Did you go any lower with your seat concepts? I was thinking just a little bit lower seat might help me off road. I mean at 6' 1" I can flatfoot the bike easily...but off camber shit is still a little annoying for me.

Right away depends on the bike. There's really nothing that crops up in every day riding that's the problem. I'd change the oil, do a valve check, maybe check the spark plug. If everything's running well ride the bike, change oil every 20-25 hours, valve checks every other oil change. The head work I was talking about makes the valve checks once or twice a year. It's a screw and lock nut adjustment and you don't even need a feeler gauge to set the valves into spec the whole process takes about 25 minutes. I do it while my oil is dribbling out during an oil change.

If you plan on racing it on a paved track or ride it like an idiot stunter you really should do some bottom end work or buy a cush-hub rear wheel for it. For normal or even aggressive-normal riding or any dirt riding it's a non-issue.

Out on the mountain trails it's all about weight here.

The lighter battery would save about 4-5lbs and the lighter headlight would take almost 3lbs off the front end.

    Thats significant.

Stock height. Just got notification of if being shipped. Doubt it'll be here before I go out of town though
I rode it out there after you and ?? ( can't remember her name) left. Honestly my drz weight didn't bother me actually riding around. It's the picking it up that got to me which I did a lot that day :anonymous:

Decent, but can't say I ever found the need to have it on the trails. Mine did just fine, and I enjoy mine riding on the street more.
