Hey, believe it or not, tampons plug bullet holes quite well. Haha

First week of August, we have permits to go from Onion Valley to Whitney Portal. Of course finally checking Whitney off of the bucket list. Last year we did Tuolumne Meadow to Devil's Postpile. My wife can't stand more than 3 or 4 nights in a tent at any stretch, so we have to do smaller sections and based on where we can get the permits.

Do you work at Yosemite (I see you're retired from the sheriff's department)?

I have a pull box of organic cotton batting that infinitely packs into a pill bottle. Like 10' of it, which is enough tinder for 100 fires. Pull box has 500' of cotton at a 1/2" diameter for $12. I use it for other things like ecig wick and my wife uses it for nail polish remover and makeup remover.

    Excellent trip!
Since converting my husband to a hammock we can go out for weeks now. We are both way more comfortable hanging than in a tent.

The Mr works here for NPS. I get the perks of magnificent day hiking and backpacking opportunities! We spend most summer weekends in the east side, Lee Vining, Mono Lk, Mammoth...

He's retired Navy, I'm retired deputy (FL)

I am 100% envious. I can't get the wife to convert to hammock camping quite yet. Not to mention, it's tough to put up hammocks above the treeline :) I hammock camp when I backpack here in AZ.

We loved Mammoth last year, hence doing the Tuolumne hike starting point. So easy with the shuttle services. So much more to explore in the Sierra's though.

I'll cowboy camp under my tarp if need be but I usually plan my start/stop points to have trees.
I've also been known to use rock walls and roof racks! ;)

I jam a tampon in the latch. I've never seen anything open with a tampon in it.

I carry a couple tampons in my first aid kids. Both in the truck and backpacking. Could careless what people think about it. They work amazingly well at absorbing stuff and for fires.

Which reminds me of a time I saw a kid face plant in a parking lot. Was like 6 or 7 is. Got my first aid kit, got gauze at first then pulled out a tampon and the kids mom had the funniest face. Cut it down in size and slid it up the kids nose and went about my day. Lady found me in the store to thank me and said she had never thought of a tampon for that and was a bit worried when I pulled it out lol.

I joked about the tampons in the latch, but I have two in my camping gear. Good fire starters and plugs for severe wounds. However, more likely I will use to save my wife.
