It was sorta strange to be on the wrong side of these ships waiting for spring to ply the waters again.

Had a kitted out jeep and a Subaru tagging along, I also have an inreach which in my opinion is required up here for wheeling or long travel to distant places.

No problem it's a unique environment that not many choose to use vacation days to visit lol. Even my wife decided her days were better spent camping this summer.

    We went up March 5th

I would recommend anyone going up there to try and coordinate it with an event, we just missed the moving of the reindeer herd starts March 16ish across the Mackenzie and the wild caribou had already for the most part crossed the Dempster highway. Beluga Jamboree is mid April.

I asked the Inuit while I was up there when would be the best time to come up on the permanent road and they said April or late August. Fall colors on the Dempster are amazing so I would have to concur, summer or late spring is absolutely a no go as the insects would be terrible.

My goal was to drive the ice road before it is no longer a means of reaching Tuktoyaktuk. The adventurers out there can still drive the ice throughout the NWT, including the Ice road to Aklavik as that will still be active.

For those that have done the Dempster it's about to get longer as they are continuing the name of the permanent road as the Dempster, so you might have to come back for Dempster 2.0.

inreach - is a safety net for getting help, if you remeber the SPOT it's a step further you can text anywhere, send location hit SOS and SAR will be notified etc...

Lol no car washes up there, polished by ice and snow I guess, when I got home things had warmed up and the truck was a mess as should be expected after 1000's of miles/kms with no asphalt.

Great trip and write-up, thanks tons. Curious about you hood antenna. Is it bolted to an HF? Are they using the Ladd channels on the Dempster?

It's a relentless fab bracket , it uses the hood mount bolts. it's a CB installed for vehicle to vehicle comms.

Didn't hear any chatter on citizen bands so i'm assuming they must be using ladds now. I can find out my father still runs trucks once and a while.

We'll have to hook up one of these days so you can check out the build so far.
