Not to worry, it's all in the training. I could leave mine in the same room with a baby chick. We raised chickens. But when it is time to work, watch out. My Shep has protected the home on more than one occasion. Someone came onto the property and I am sure they wish they never had. The dog literally took me outback to show me what she did. All I could say was WOW what a good girl. Whomever it was, he never came back. Greta was so happy for several days afterwards. They will definitely do their job when your not there.

Training for the sole purpose of waterfowl hunting. Ive done it on my own with the help of a mentor and i love seeing daily progress. I've actually trained a few local house dogs (and their owners) on basic OB after they watched moxie work. my current pup just finished her first season. While I said I don't get into the test game, I will be running her to get her seasoned hunter title next month. I'm bypassing the junior test simply based on time and money. we don't get many tests around Florida so I have maximize opportunity. its simply to prove to myself she can do it... field trials are too consuming IMO

Ive become obsessed with the training aspect of waterfowl hunting.

Cool - I waterfowl hunt with my GSP's too (field & water). I train a lot different than most Lab folks. I do some simple directional, but not with a whistle and I primarily rely on good marking skills and I allow my dog to use his drive & nose to find the ducks. I've never lost a crippled duck or goose. I train them on long & multiple marks & blinds using one of those dummy launchers. I start them out with short and progress from there. In the winter, I'll create lanes in the snow to keep them on a good line. All fun stuff!

Don't get me wrong....it's really cool watching the lab trials where they're giving directional 200 yds out......but frankly, in a hunting situation, it's the most annoying thing witnessing from afar (another blind).....part of my reason for hunting is simply being out in beautiful settings enjoying the serenity (with occasional gun fire of course).....but I've seen too many instances of handlers stood up in a blind blowing on those whistles for 10-15 minutes trying to get that dog to the duck...meanwhile flaring all the ducks. I've also seen many nice labs work without even needing commands.

    What breed?

He looks similar to my dog, which I've been told is a Black Lab/Irish Setter. Russel found me when he was less than a year old. He was a stray wandering around the country side that no one knew anything about. Fur all mangled and matted and no collar or tags. Best behaved dog I've had, very grateful and loving. He is 10ish years old now. Only picture I have with me at work right currently.

I had a lab a few years back that was really smart. I did the retriever training with her and she caught on quickly. I wanted to get the seasoned title for her but the first hunt test I did with her, they gassed the birds and they smelt terrible. She did everything perfect, except pick up the bird due to the horrible smell. After that, I haven't ran another one.

Must be the angle. Russel was never over 75lbs in his prime. Good looking girl though!

Great Dane? I'm looking at getting on towards the end of the year if I can convince my girlfriend. My neighbor had 2 danes weight about 160 and 180. Both thought they were lap dogs lol

I've had the DISpleasure of hunting with one of those dogs. The owner blew the whistle so much I finally just got out of the boat and went and got the bird. Sounded like we were at a rave. There are retrieves I won't send my dog on... Plain and simple if a bird lands in thick cattails that I believe to hold gators, she won't go. I simply run the boat in and get it.

My buddy has a Drathaar and it's awesome to watch that dog work. We snipe hunt together his dogs nose blows my dogs nose away.

Yep she was about 120 at her heaviest. We got her from a Great Dane rescue in upstate ny... She would have been bigger but when she was young her front leg was growing sideways like a hockey stick and they operated and she had an erector set as we called it on her leg for a while. My mother was training her to go to hospitals to see people but because the would give paw she didn't pass because if you stopped petting her she'd nudge you or pull your arm down lol but she was a gentle giant she was awesome with my younger brother being he has autism and he didn't understand being gentle she never bit him no matter what he did lol and they're huge at full size my bright is about 6'5 she would hop up on the fence and stand face to face with him
