I'm very sorry OP. I can only imagine how traumatic the experience has been for you. At least it seems that justice has partially been served with them caught. What update have you from your insurance company regarding the truck?

As far as guns go, pulling the trigger in most states requires the PROVABLE imminence of deadly/serious physical harm to you or someone else. With that, you can use deadly force to protect yourself/others. You as the person defending yourself with the weapon are liable for the outcome, good or bad. Likely even if it is justified you will be 50k+ in legal fees defending yourself even if your shooting is justified, so you had better be damn sure it's worth putting you and your family's life at risk. It's not just you who will pay for pulling the trigger.

That being said, being alive after a justifiable self defense incident and being able to feel the warmth in the touch of the ones you love would be worth all the costs associated.

When I bought my truck a couple weeks ago (in San Diego too, coincidentally), they were very insistent that I purchase their alarm system due to Tacomas being one of the "top 5 stolen vehicles in the area" (I'm sure it was 50/50 sales tactic/truth).

At any rate, I'm heading back down to San Diego next week to pick my truck up. I'll be sure to haul ass outta there....

....back to Los Angeles where I'm probably just as likely to get carjacked :(

Anyway, glad you're okay OP and that they retrieved your truck. Material possessions can always be replaced, one way or the other.

The criminal would have been carried away covered up in a bag here and on their way to meet their maker.

The fob being on you makes no difference if the truck is already running if they set up the 3rd gen the same as every other Toyota with a smart key. You only run into an issue when you shut the vehicle off as you will not be able to restart it. As long as the truck is running you can drive away from the fob in every other Smart key vehicle I have driven. You will get an alert on the dash but I have yet to come across a vehicle that will shut the vehicle down if put into drive while the key is not detected.

I believe you are correct. In California any " theft recovered" vehicle will receive a salvage title. At least that was the law/ rule when I left CA. in 2007

I understand the stupid gun laws in Ca especially about carrying them in you truck/auto if you followed the laws to a "T" you would had to basically asked the suspect to wait, while you retrieved your "locked and secured unloaded" gun then grabbed your ammo from a second location out of reach from the gun by law, Thank you CA. In Texas because of our awesome love of the 2nd amendment that would have been an attempted GTA with a dead suspect.
Glad to hear you are safe. However as stated in a previous post. No matter what state you are in you are still responsible for every single bullet that leaves that gun .Unfortunately even in a justifiable self defense shooting just because criminal charges are not charged against you are still subject to civil lawsuit. It is a shame that this scenario has happened to many times.Sometimes depending on the situation not putting up a fight and just giving them what they want is the best solution.

Wow.. ^^^ that is wrong on many levels.

First off there's enough weapons "for personal use" in the USA = 6 guns for every man woman and child. We live in Philly - ASSume everyone is carrying(.) period. Why do you think gang members carry automatics = more firepower = better chance to survive. Oh and 800 deaths already in the USA from gun violence first 60 days. Where's the REAL war? I would say from that statistic there's a war right here in USA.

I Don't believe in coincidence or "luck" however you want to play it... I do believe in Karma. What goes around comes around. Choose wisely what you do and say. Not saying the OP deserves what happened I am saying we need to think about where we are, who's around us and what we are doing, all the time.

Driving under the influence = go directly to jail & do not collect $200. Risk loosing everything you love for a glass of beer or whatever?? gimme a break.

Buy a case put in back of Taco, on the drive home stop for munchies, arrive home safely and drink all beer and eat all munchies ... win win

THey don't allow self defense or their 'subjects' to carry weapons in public unless you're rich and connected.

800 deaths by who? Criminal on criminal, or criminal on citizen? Criminals killing criminals who cares. Remove the liberal metropolitan failures and we would have a gun violence rate on par with Belgium. If Texas was it's own country, they would have a gun ownership rate that exceeds Serbia and one of the lowest per capita gun deaths on the planet.

Sorry for my asinine response, but after seeing mass graves in BiH, secular violence in Iraq, and tribal killings in AFG, I will not be an unarmed subject, I will be an armed citizen.

What is "gun violence" and how is it different from regular violence? Is there a thing called knife violence? Is an idiot driver who crashes and kills someone different than an idiot driver who crashes and kills someone, while drunk? Why?

No, but try working at a bar near your house, see how many people leave and drive home drunk on a nightly basis, then get back to me on the "safety" of your area. I personally don't drink, but that was an eye opening experience for me.
