I recently (early February) put a $500 deposit down on a 2016 Tacoma SR AC 2.7 4x4 MT. Lately, I'm having "cold feet" as the days come closer to the truck potentially being here due to this being my first large finical purchase, and not caring too much for my dealership. If I backed out now, could I be held liable to any legal actions from the dealership?

If you signed the bill of sale with your trucks VIN number etc then yes they could escalate.
But if you didn't and simply put a deposit down, you'll likely get it back if your civil about it. Even though some dealerships have a "non refundable" deposit policy - you'll likely be able to get it back.

I haven't received my VIN and I don't recall signing anything. I'm not even worried about the $500. Just worried that I may now want the truck

Yeah, I sold my 2007 Duramax and literally went that day to order the Tacoma without too much thought. Wasn't my brightest moment.

If you back out they will just keep the truck on their lot and sell it to the next person. They have the right to keep your deposit but may end up giving it back, just depends

I can only speak to my own state of Washington, but I have it on good authority that here dealerships are legally required to refund your deposit at any time prior to signing paperwork that transfers vehicle ownership should you request it.

I have no doubt that I will, just not liking my dealership too much.

I've literally had to ask every single time for an update, but my salesman "will keep me posted". I went in and asked them about potentially backing out and he got the manager involved and the manager pretty much talked to me like I was an idiot.

One can never have too many light bars.
Well you'll only have to deal with them one more time. I wouldn't back out and surrender 500 bucks just because you don't like the dealership. If anything you would be letting them win because they're gonna take your 500 and sell the truck to someone else.

Depends on the state but Im pretty sure most of them will give you the deposit back. The deal isn't done until you drive off the lot and even then you usually have 3 days. Its a great truck if you are nervous due to the price - prices will be coming down on these when the 17s roll out. Saw some sick deals on the 15s in September.

Thanks for the response. Main concern is buying a new vehicle when I don't put many miles on my truck a year (I have a company vehicle). Feel like I could use the money for better things

Since it is a Tacoma and they will have no problem selling it, they will be o.k. They say non-refundable, and it will vary from dealer to dealer, but my salesman told me up front that if the truck comes in and its not exactly what I want or if I changed my mind all together, he will refund the deposit, because it will be no loss to them. You have the right to refuse, I mean things happen in the time it takes to get one of these trucks on the lot and they will understand that.

Usually says on a receipt or whatever the deposit is non refundable
