4.0L 1GR 2nd Gen Oil Change Guide

Hey y'all. Attempting my first ever oil change. So ya know, I'm about to ask a dumb question that's probably really obvious.

But when I removed the oil filter and let the little bit of oil drain into an empty water bottle, there wasn't a cap on that little spout. It looks like that's the only time that spout is used is when changing the oil filter. Is that correct?

Trying to figure out if it's important enough to buy a new one. Thanks!

One more: I went to top off my coolant and the fluid that's in there is red (definitely the coolant reservoir, though). The antifreeze/coolant I bought is yellow-green. Any problem mixing them?

I put probably a few tablespoons of the green in, just the amount that got in until I realized the coolants weren't the same and stop pouring.

But I can get a turkey baster and remove all of it, or maybe just undo this hose clamp and drain the reservoir.

 

I would drain the reservoir. Then pick up a gallon of Toyota SLLC. No need to mix the SLLC with water, as it's premixed. If you get the older LLC type you'll need to cut it with 50% distilled water before you use it.

 

Thanks. With the instructions on the bottle (guess I could have read those first, right?) and a post on TW Live I determined that it's ok to add that particular antifreeze to any other color, it says so on the bottle. So...

Good stuff, have to admit I'm an old school car guy working on Dodges, Chevy, Ford until this truck. First foreign vehicle. Some of the stuff I was reading lately had me second guessing my oil change the other week. This put me at ease lol.

167k miles, any real reason to switch to high mileage?

 

I just use full synthetic 5w-20 mobil 1. The reason? Its just better quality oil for ur truck. I switched after my service warranty ran out from the dealer. They use conventional oil and say its good enough but as for me I have been using full synthetic on my last truck and it ran great!

 

Don't forget to remove your cup or bottle under the oil filter drain.lol

@Sandman614 not sure if the conventional oil the dealer uses is synthetic. When I was told they use regular oil, I thought it was not synthetic. unless I'm mistaken..

 

We are not on the same page. I was referring to the two mobil1 oils in my picture, which are both Synthetic. I have no idea what any stealership uses, versus what they tell you they use.
