Those are cool but my biggest beef with "traditional" drawer systems also is the real estate that you're giving up just for the rails, tracks, rollers, etc. There's just a lot of open spaces in between, under, and surrounding the drawers. These Tacomas, especially with the 5' beds really have a lack of stowage as it is. I've been hauling around gear for years in my 6' bed Toyotas and a lot of the time I still use my '07 GMC K3500 with 8' bed to do any real hauling, but I think we all know why we like these smaller trucks for outlanding, expeditions, and just real world moving about. I'd like to see some real solutions that address these problems, because I think a lot of peeps have some wasted space in their trucks.

I'm really interested in this. I want a good way to store stuff under the cover that doesn't take a lot of space and isee fairly easy to take out. Right now I just have tote in the bed that flips over every time off road and is supper annoying.

This sounds great! I don't have a bed cover on my taco, but i can't commit to a permanent tool box with only a shortbed truck. Still i really want a way to store some stuff in the bed when needed.

A box that's easily removable would be excellent. Sliding on the rails sound great too. But anyway that makes it easily removable would make me happy. Lockable for the people who don't have bed covers could make it convenient for all tacoma owners.

I'll be watching! OP said he'll buy mine too Mr. Voodoo :D

So I have to make this something that can break down easily for shipping.

It also has to be affordable. Drawers would add significant cost, and reduce the effective internal space.

Simple doors either on the back, or on top, would be most cost effective.

The door on top seems the logical and cost effective way. Unless you could make it open like a land rover trunk, little tailgate down, Main lid up.

With some "tailgate" straps on it so when opened it would stay rigidly flat for a staging/working platform

@KB Voodoo sign me up for one right now :D

If this doesnt come alive, I will go with my initial plan of buying your new basket design, and just add a lid to it out of aluminum. Along with using a couple pieces of angle iron to drop it below the bed rails.

That's honestly less than i was thinking.. I'm poor, so i always assume everything Will cost a million dollars lol

Still hoping the door/doors are lockable. Could be an optional add-on...

im not so much worried about the price, but I am curious what the rendering will look like compared to my needs, and I know that will take some time to come up with so I will wait patiently :D

Locking doors will definitely be included. It would be worthless without it.

I've been using a tuffbox and a ratchet strap in place of something like this. If you could make something that sits inside the bed and doesn't stick out over the top just like what is pictured I'd be up to NY at your doorstep ready to pick it up

I don't think that qualifies as too expensive.
Truck Covers USA makes a metal roll top tonneau tool box combo, in two different capacities. Clearly not the same thing as the OP, or you, is talking about, but a similar idea. They start at 2500.00. Options can take them well over 3000.00.

There is a lot of creative room in this niche, me thinks. And not many products that bridge the gap of tonneau storage with capacity for other storage.

I still think both doors need to be made. I would take a higher shipping cost to a stronger unit. Your only talking 56ish inches which isn't so big. Actually the last time I ordered a Delta box, the shipping was only $40 which isn't bad considering that it was an aluminum truck box. Strenght and reliability over shipping cost. People will pay the shipping for a knockout product. Please do both on the doors though, as it truly will make it practical for all situations.
