gas mileage

hey I have a 2010 v6 tocoma that has 6,000 miles. I can only get 18.6 mpg, will this change as it gets older? or should i do something after market wise? im just looking for better gas mileage !!

 

I wish i could get that milage. is it city or highway or both? just use a light foot. good luck

 

give it a bit more time to break in......your mileage will get better.

 

first off, over 18 on a truck is pretty good. you want better, get a car...

anything aftermarket you pay for (headers, exhaust, larger tires, intakes, etc) will not help mileage, no matter what others say.

here is what i posted in another forum....

if i gain 2mpg, i would save $5 per fillup using todays prices. i usually fillup ~50 times a year, so that would 2mpg would save me $250/year. so add up how much all those mods add, divide by $250, and you will find your payback time.

for example of just a few upgrades...

URD intake - 260
DTLT headers - 500
TRD exhaust - 350

...just those three mods alone will cost over 1100, which would take over 4 years to just break even...and thats if you really get +2mpg or better on EVERY fillup!! see...it just doesnt make sense to me personally to do these types of mods for mpgs..

now, light foot mod, timing traffic lights, going the speed limit, using cruise control on flat roads, proper tire inflation, regular maintaince, etc... are all "mods" that WILL make a difference on mpgs...and they are all FREE!!

 

yeah thats on highway, i am extremely light on the pedal im hoping to squeeze 20 out of it maybe if i change the fuel filter and send some sea foam through it. I dont know, you guys have anymore suggestions? oh and by the way you can always expect more out of a machine.

 

Seafoam isn't going to help your brand new truck. And you can expect more for a machine- if you completely rebuild it. You aren't going to get 1.5 MPGS from basic bolt-on mods.

You bought the truck- What did the window stickers say?? It probably warned you about this. How fast are you going on the highway??

Gas mileage should not a top concern when buying a truck.

 

18.6 is really good. i drive pretty easy and that number is about the best i get. with the winter here they change the fuel formula so u might see it go down a little bit like i did. happy holidays.

 

the best I have gotten on my truck is 24.5 mpg on a road trip and 18 mpg daily driving it. the winter gas fuel mixture is being offered at stations now so do not expect much of a mpg increase until next spring, though your truck will break in some as time goes on. if you can find a gas station that is not putting ethanol in the gas then fill up there and you'll get better mpg. sea foam is for high mileage vehicles...

 

+1 ... I used to keep track of the mileage for the first couple months and then I thought ... it's a 4x4 truck not a civic so who cares!! And I stopped checking the mileage and I drive it a bit harder and really enjoy it!!

my 1st tank off the lot was 20.5 mpg, 90% highway.... my next tank was 16.5 mpg, 90% city with some trailer pulling. (2010 dc sport 4WD)

 

A reason to maybe re-think that philosophy - keeping track of mileage can help alert you to problems early on. An unusual drop in mileage might indicate something like a worn/malfunctioning O2 sensor, or even something simple like lower tire pressures.

 

Shit man, I would love to see 18. I am all city so I get pretty much what the sticker says. Although past 2 tanks have been in the 14's. Winter gas and remote starter does a number to my MPG's. I think we are listed at 16/20 for the V6. 18 is right there for a mix. If you are on only highway, try going 5mph's less and use 91/93 in your tank. I amsure you can squeak out 20 that way. Once this truck gets over 65mph it is a siphon on the gas.
