That's not bad. Go price an Elite series or UWS tool box. You're right in there. Just don't cut corners!!

That's exactly why I came up with this idea. I'm glad someone else can see that there is definitely a need for this. I've fought storage solutions my whole life, and now we have trucks with rails and such and are way more adaptable than trucks of previous generations.

I need a measurement: What is the vertical distance from the center of the cleat rail, to the top of the wheel well on a 2016? And the same for a 2nd gen?

If the item is made to be broken down, would the open seams leak?

I would prefer it not be able to break down, it will be stronger and more weather friendly, i.e., less seals to go bad and crack and such.

KB, I think if you plan on 7 7/16's, when you get real weight in the box, it will settle on the fender wells and take some pressure off of the rails, IMO. Also mine is only 1 truck and who knows how many thousandths or hundredths these could be off from the factory. I'm sure there is more than one bed mold, so looking at another truck might help. My truck was built in Houston, perhaps you can find one built in California. Maybe even find a longbed too. -Will

The thought crosses my mind every day.....

So based on your numbers, I would make the total height of the box 7". Let's see what the 2nd gen guys say before we nail it down.

The seams will bolt together, and be fairly tight. Anybody who wants it to be leak proof could easily silcone the seams during assembly. Problem solved.

It's way better for shipping if it ships disassembled.

I'll design it so the seams overlap. Even without sealant, it will barely leak.

I'd be more concerned about dust in my neck of the woods, but with overlapping seams, it most likely shed water from rain, etc. You might have to take a shower with it to test it, I doubt your getting rain yet. haha

Is it ok if the old lady joins in? Do you want the test sample after we're done?

I've never actually had a tonneau cover before, and knew when I ordered the truck that I probably wouldn't use it that much, but I think that you can kinda have your cake and eat it too, so to speak. I like that I have the option of using it on road trips, adventures, etc. Having a box like this would only make the truck more universal. These trucks only come with tonneaus from the factory and cannot be added on at the dealer level, unless it is an aftermarket brand. I think everyone should order their trucks with the cover for as cheap as they are and the covers are very user friendly. My wife & kids can fold it up no problem, which is nice. Having this type of storage box with the factory cover will only make the truck more versatile.

I am in on this as well. It's gotta lock, because I tend to carry tools around with me that are valuable. The last tool box I bought was a Weatherguard and I paid over $600 for it - as long as the quality is high it's worth it to me.

KB, I know it's another request, but would it be possible to lock to the rail system from inside of the box for those of us who may carry AR's or Birdguns, etc.? That way the whole unit isn't easy to steal.

Hmmmmmmm.........yea.....maybe. Yeah, that is definitely doable. I've got a couple rifles myself that I wouldn't want snagged.

In fact, when I size it, I'll make sure it can fit a standard hard side rifle case.
