I "thought" I ordered a 2016 TRD Sport with the Toyota Tonneau cover last November. The dealer and I both assumed the tonneau cover was a dealer installed option.

When I closed on the deal and took delivery of the truck, I was told the tonneau cover was on back order.

2 months later I was told the tonneau cover was in and I scheduled installation.

The tonneau they installed was an after market substitute. When I complained they promised to get me the factory cover.

From what I've learned from conversations with other Toyota parts departments is that the "Toyota" Tonneau cover is not and will not be available as a dealer installed option.

Can anyone out there shed light on this? If I'm stuck with the after market cover should I demand any type of restitution?

If true, I believe the dealer acted in good faith but Toyota did not fully inform the consumers let alone their dealers.

Seems the OEM cover is a port installed option, not dealer installed. What kind of aftermarket cover did they give you?

You may be better off with that since the OEM cover requires cutting the bed rails.

i cant see that being true. What would happen if someone broke it or damaged somehow and needed replaced. Saying the dealer cannot get a replacement if that ever came up. Sounds like they pulled something on you

The individual parts of the OEM cover can be ordered, but not as a whole install kit.

Call any Toyota dealer and try to order the OEM Tonneau cover whole install kit. It's not possible.

There was never a LB OEM cover. They never made those.

That's kind of where I was getting at. They made it available for order at first, but started retracting it because it wasn't available.

Maybe they finally realized it was a crap design to have to cut the bed rails for installation and decided to put a halt on them to consider some modification.

    None... sigh
Same thing happened to me, told the dealership that I wanted the cover, ended up getting an after market Extang Solid Fold 2.0. I'm happy with it so far, not 100% water tight, but its a truck bed. If that's what you got, make sure you got the cab rail seals as part of the kit. It was an addition later on by Extang. When mine was installed, they filled the gaps with some clear silicone, had to take it back and have the seals put in, which were provided by Extang.

No worries  Still curious if OP is LB or SB though so we will know more info. Mine is a SB and came with the factory cover. I actually like it for the most part. Feels nice and sturdy. Since it is a "crap design" and has to cut the plastic rails, it makes it where the bolts the latch connects too are screwed into the side of the bed. I actually like that. Seems like though everyone is out to get Toyota and their terrible designs. I guess I'm just a minority here and like it.

The Extang is better than the factory Toyota one anyway....

They installed a "Rugged Cover II" trifold hard cover. It looks good and doesn't leak. But I don't like the clamp set-up. They are cumbersome and limit storage space because you need to leave room to unlatch. It was an issue recently when I had to max out the bed for a long road trip. The other issue is properly stowing the latches when folding up the cover. If the latches aren't stowed properly it will scratch the hell out of the top of the cover if you unfold the second section. Now that I know the issue I can adjust but my wife didn't get it and almost caused damage. It's just a matter of time before a "helpful" friend makes the same mistake.

Based on the replies to my post thus far - the dealer / Tacoma pulled a fast one on me. If they were honest in the beginning I could have accepted this oversight. But what would be a fair resolution since the dealer is still telling me that I will get the factory cover as soon as it is available.

Says who?, I just sold a DCLB with the OEM Hard Tonneau.

I just walked through the Toyota accessory page (http://www.toyotaasg.com) and found no trace of the hard tonneau cover on that site. It is available for both the long and short bed models, but from what I can see right now it is a PPO or Port installed accessory only.

Looks like they gave you a cheap cover. How is the quality of the cover?

I noticed that too. When I reserved the truck in October the web site had the cover listed in the accessories page. They are trying to cover their tracks.
