I look at it like I would an insurance claim I was handling. If we use a reconditioned/recycled part, we're required to use on that is in as good or better condition than the part we're replacing. But if we are repairing a current year vehicle with relatively low miles on it, we're not going to do a disservice to the customer, we're going to replace with a brand new part. I think the dealership should do the same for the OP. That's pretty sucky service, IMO.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Can I high five myself for missing a joke?

You say their kicking ass, yet have no idea what either brand is actually making on either truck. If Sweers said that, he's incorrect. I've met the guy though, he's not a bad dude. His hands are tied on anything he does of course.

OK here is my input on this, for what it's worth. I work for Caterpillar Corp and I primarily work on very large diesel/natural gas/propane/methane engine with horse power ranging from 500hp to 4500hp ($100,000 to $4.5M). I am usually working on these engines when they are brand new, I do new engine installations. When something fails in one of our engines, pistons, heads, valves, cranks, ect...it is 90% of the time replaced with a reman part. That reman part is usually better than the original part. The part original normally fails due to poor manufacturing, because the part is being manufactured at a high rate of speed to get the product out the door and to the dealerships as fast as possible, so attention to detail usually goes out the window. Reman parts on the other hand are manufactured at a slower pace and in less quantity but yet because the quantity is lower the quality can be better. So in short, don't disregard a remanufactured part as a bad part. There is nothing wrong with a Reman part, it is usually a better quality part and can benefit you in the long run. I would however push for a extended warranty for all the aggravation this has caused. Ultimately this should not have happened to you on a new vehicle, but yet the fact is, it does but you should be compensated for your troubles.

And if there's no new parts available? Bah, you should know better if you're an adjuster. Chances of getting a new transmission on a first year model vehicle that's over capacity in production, essentially zero.

From my understanding there isn't anything wrong with the transmission. The problem is that a majority of the trucks are being sold with low fluid or coming from the factory low. People are driving them unaware of it for a while on low fluid making the transmission worse. When they do have issues with it, they bring it to the dealer and that can't find the problem so they give it back. So then matters are just getting worse.

Well that's going to be a while. I would personally rather buy a 3rd gen after a few models come out to get a chance to fix some of the issues. Chances are if you wait until 2020, there are going to be some first year problems with a redesign. Oh and also, i'd expect the displacement to be even lower than a 3.5, possibly with a turbo. Just seems like the way things are going, so don't expect anything with a higher displacement, i'd be very surprised.

A bigger problem will be if the reman trans suffers from the same problems

Why not have them rebuild the one you have instead of putting in a reman?

You mean send it out to be rebuilt, right? 'Cause I don't know any dealership that has that skill level anymore. They just PnP parts.

And at the end of the day, what does it matter? What makes it different than a reman unit?

Even bigger problem is that once @Goose16 puts reman transmission in his truck Carfax will show that and nobody will be willing to pay him any good money for his truck... instant loss.
Plus reman items never lasted for me as long as Toyota original parts, because they are not made to the same standard, they are couple grade levels below the factory new because they don't have to have 3/36 000 bumper to bumper warranty on them.

Toyota put a "Rebuilt" Trans in my Tundra at 35k.......100k later it is still working just fine. As to Carfax....it won't show that the tranny was replaced (at least it didn't show on my Tundra when I just ran it). Then again, I had a Ford Probe that went swimming in the flood of 97, almost a total and that never showed up on Carfax either...

I've never seen such a thing on Carfax.

In fact I've never seen anything outside of accident repairs or ODO readings from registration or inspection work. And the last two are not input, they are gleaned from data bases by bot crawlers.

I have BlueT blocked but seeing some of his quoted post really make it show that it was a very good decision to make.
Anyway I look at refurbs/reman stuff as not bad at all. Honestly I think you are more likely to get a perfect working unit that is refurb/reman because its sent back to the factory it is gone over and made sure it meets specs so it is tested probably more thoroughly then some of the ones coming off the line. So if there was a problem they would probably catch it. Dont look at it as a bad thing. Just think of it as a over inspected unit you are getting.
