No I totally get it now. I just thought that was about 240 more than I paid for a factory one. I was going to tell you to go have beef with your Toy salesman (er woman).

    That seems quite reasonable.

That's what I thought. But then again it's just plastic crap. I'm sure we're paying for the tooling more than materials.

It'll be interesting to see how it holds up over time. Will it sag, and fade, and start to look like shit?

I wonder too. I mean the quality seems very good and rugged, but we get a lot of direct sunlight here, so we'll see. This is the first vehicle that I've owned that I plan on keeping in my shop at home every night too, so I'm sure that will help some. Plus I actually think the cover will be off most of the time so.....

I think the quality and design of it are pretty nice, I don't think it'll have any issues in the foreseeable future.

Yeah but your foreseeable future and mine might be 2 different things. I'll probably have this truck still when I die of old age someday. I'm not one of these peeps who trades in their stuff every 5 years. It may have 37's and solid axles under it when I'm no longer using it as a daily driver. I'll just buy a new one when it's no longer practical to drive every day. I'm old skool like that! :rockband:

I have a Leer cap too. Other fellows on here have built similar storage like the one above for far less than a grand. I'm building one this summer out of plywood, and covering it in marine carpet or non slip rubber. It will have two drawers (made at buddies cabinet shop) at the back and flip up at the front to access lower storage. My tailgate has a keyless BOLT pop & lock, and I'm just waiting for the solenoid (works on my Toyota Fob) to make the cap keyless as well. Everything will be out of sight and secure to a degree.

... I'm pretty sure that the composite boxes are all made at the same factory and then shipped to the respective assembly plants. Dimensions should be uniform.

I think I may try to do the same. Build my own out of plywood if I don't find anything I like that's reasonably priced.

That doesn't exist unless it's used or you DIY. Even then, purchasing hardware and components/materials sometimes surpasses the cost of buying new. In this case, a sheet and a half of 3/4 ply (scrounged from the scraps in back of my barn), deck screws, drawer runners, and carpet/glue should come out to less than $200 CAD.

I am pretty anal (carpenter by trade) when I put things together, so I know that what I eventually come up for storage in the back with will be cool and useful with no wasted space. Walk across the FailMart parking lot, hit the Fob and voila! ... everything unlocks at once; no fumbling with a bunch of keys. I'll be completely mall ready!

If you want to see an example:

I like that, but maybe I should have specified. By reasonable I'm talking $500-600.

I'd be interested in one of these boxes as well as I am looking for something to fit under the cover but not consume the entire bed.
