I'm gonna throw my awning on my roof rack

 

I love my new setup with the 4' ARB awning. Perfect for cooking off the tailgate. I even got a chance to use it the other day while hanging out with some friends.

 

How tall are you? I'm 6'2 and want to be able to stand under it without ducking. unloaded with only the rack and tent I think I'll be fine... but throw camping gear in... I think I'll be needing the Dakar AAL shortly.

 

May be easier to cut a big chunk out of your legs tbh

 

I was thinking about just adding longer shackles from Toytec... but unsure if that would f anything up as it's kind of a bandaid. I'll be re-doing all my suspension next year so if I don't have to do it now, I won't.

 

IIRC adding longer shackles doesn't do much. Most people keep the stock length. I'd just add the AAL tbh

 

I'm 6' and yes I do have to duck my head a bit under the canopy. I mounted it low because I want full access to my mount the window bars on the tent. Plus most of my time under the canopy will be spent sitting down.

 

Directed to the 1st gen owners primarily running the RTT on a bedrack - Is anyone experiencing any 'spreading' of the bed sides at the tailgate? If so, what are you doing to combat that?

When I had my 81 Toyota 4x4, I had something very similar to this

they'd lift a little, yeah I want to do the AAL, just don't have the space right now, nor the know how (I know it's simple, but I'm a moron... so...there's that... lol)

 

you shouldn't have to worry about the bed spreading, the force is up and down. not out. if it's going out, it means your rack is flexing because you're using too thin a material.

 

I wanna say the AAL would be easier than the shackle

I have done 4 wheeling seasons with my RTT and not experienced any trouble. I do not have it on year round tho. Canopy in the winter, RTT the rest of the year.

IMO, the bed rack play a role here. I well designed rack spreads the load along the entire bed rail. Plus I think the all-metal 1st gen beds are generally stronger than ones with composite construction.

 

I know you are trying to make a point here, but the significance escapes me.

 

Those of you with your RTT mounted on a rack on top of your canopy, are you worried about your canopy cracking?

I called Snugtop and they said the canopy is rated for a "load rate" of 250 lbs
CVT RTT Shasta is 125lbs and the Mt Rainier is 165lbs
Adding 2 adults on top of that = 350-400lbs
Totaling a mounted 500-600lbs


Just curious of your guys' experience with mounting a RTT on top of a canopy...... THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!
