What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Passenger cars have low enough rear bumpers that they don't kick up rocks and road debris in the same way.

 

Well then why don't all trucks have flaps?

 

Because a lot of people don't like the way they look, and in turn, break a lot of other people's windshields. Dealerships can also make extra money on a deal by offering them as an option instead of standard from the factory. In most states it is a legal requirement for tractor trailers to have flaps for the same reason. Pickups that don't ride low to the ground should come with them standard, imo.

 

My $.02 on mudflaps...rock chips in windshields can come from vehicles 100' - 200' or more ahead, since gravel does bounce, and ricochet off the road surface quite well. Tailgating isn't necessarily the cause. Ever notice the sign on the back of a lot of dump trucks, warning drivers to stay back several hundred feet?
Every time I go to town, I have to drive over 3 miles of gravel to get to the first paved road, and constantly hear gravel bouncing off my fender liners and tube steps, even with the flaps on, so I hate to think of what my rocker panels would look like without the flaps.
Besides, I actually think they look kinda cool, but that's just me...

 

Actually, ALL of the continental 48 states require semi's to have flaps. F.Y.I.

 

That is beautiful. I generally don't care for the ones that float midway behind the window. I like that one though!

 

I meant to ask then why aren't they mandated. Reminder, these are 1/4 ton little trucks, not dump trucks or semis. I kinda see your point, but I don't drive on gravel roads all the time, and don't tailgate so I don't have this issue. Also when I do, I don't have any chipped paint.

 

Come on guys. I just want to see what people are up to with their Tacoma.

 

So if you live and drive on gravel roads very frequently, you should have them, other wise they are not necessary. The end.

 

I think they make E and D rated R/T's the D rated will be much softer

 

My tailgate skin and top cap are due to be delivered today, so that's a project for this afternoon or tomorrow, along with the weatherstripping on the tonneau cover. Had to clean out the bed after hauling a load of topsoil to fill in some holes in my yard after digging some big rocks up.

I decided to go with the P rating. I don't do much 'rock crawling' so I wasn't as worried about sidewall punctures. Just sand/dirt/snow. Figured it was unwarranted to get a heavier tire if not needed.

 

Next time try the LT's (not p metric). They ride much better than the stock p rated tire.

 

Ah, gotcha, was thinking between the load ratings. Also, ExpressTire had them on sale for $135/each. I do love the way the R/T's look but those were like $220-something each.

 

The in between load rating you are looking for would be the C Load. They are a little bit harder to find, but they are great because they are right in the middle of P rated tires and E load, which are heavy as hell. One good thing about the P metrics, is the price is really good.

 

Not "done", but "doing", ...... Just ordered a U-bolt flip kit from Headstrong Offroad. I have a plan to make my own bump stops.....We'll see how THAT works out. May be going back later after those. One step at a time!

 

Always behind DIY, but if your plan doesn't work out, I've been very happy with my Wheeler's bumpstops. (Although I just have the front for now.)

 

Mudflaps are lame. Plus my MTRs don't pick up any rocks

 

Hmm, making me question if I should head back and get some LT's. I do no towing or hauling of any kind but will see some light off-roading.
