I think my problem is either in the trigger or whatever that spring thing is when you take off the tip.

That is your liner. It runs all the way back to the welder. I would start there. They are somewhat universal. You buy one longer than your lead and cut to size.

Im hoping its just dirty, like I said I havent used it much to warrant being changed IMO...Im talking less than 5 hours total use if that. Ive just welded one game camera box and half of another and couple small welds so it shouldnt be worn out. I'll look into cleaning and see how that goes.

If the wire is old and rusty then get new wire as well.

You can try and lead them to water but they just fall in.

I'm interested in tinkering with welding- I don't want to spend a ton of money on a welder.

My goal is to weld between 1/16" steel to MAYBE 1/4" steel but I don't even know what I would make with that. I would think my typical project would be 1/8". I wouldn't hate trying to tack together some aluminum either (even though the machines I'm looking at say they aren't for aluminum)

I'm set on trying a cheap harbor freight welder...

So my question is: Which of these two should I get? I have watched a days worth of videos on stick welding vs flux core welding but I still haven't fully answered my question as to which is the better value for what I want to weld.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
Yep don't do it buy a quality machine or you will regret it there are tons of good affordable machines out there HF is not the place to be looking for a welder. Start on Craigslist for a good used one.

Pick up a miller, Lincoln, or Hobart and a bottle of gas. Look for a used one or save up a bit.

If your buying new go for the Hobart Good Hobby machine

    Used Miller Lincoln or Hobart.

Take someone along who can weld down load and read through the operators manual of machines you might like.

I think Ive gotten my problem with my welder fixed. I had to take apart the trigger and clean the contact inside. It wasnt real dirty looking but there was some corrosion and the little washer looked like it was hanging up and not engaging correctly so I lightly sanded it down and it seems to be working better now. I also sprayed the tip of the liner off with brake cleaner as it seemed to be dirty. I tested it a little last night and it seems to function better than it has.

Change out those parts you cleaned with brake cleaner right away and don't use them. Welding on parts that were cleaned with brake cleaner produces phosgene gas, which is deadly!
