Sport has available F/R ARB lockers and gearing right now. The OR has a different axle and there is absolutely nothing available, not to mention the electric locker is not the same nor near as reliable. Crawl control is a gimick for yuppies that need help and don't know how to wheel or just want to creep down the trail while sipping their coffee.

    Nuff said...

I was wondering about that. I have a 2015 Off Road Package and during the snow up here, I noticed that while turning in a parking lot, I got that familiar tugging on the front tires while turning, like my front diff was locked. I had left it in 4x4 as the roads still had some ice on them, but the pavement in that lot was dry. I thought the front diff in mine was open but obviously not. I didn't turn off the A-track or anything, just had it in 4HI and I could tell the tires were fighting each other like my front diff was locked. I switched it back to 2HI and when the light went off, it was fine. So am I correct in understanding that in 4HI, my front diff is locked? Or is it LSD? Obviously I need to read up more on it.

Dee put out some great info regarding the differences. 4H with LSD and traction control off gives excellent control of the vehicle. I also enjoy the DCSB w/ 6SPD MT. Vehicle handles low traction conditions extremely well. Plus, admit it, the scoop is cool. Color matching is also pretty bad ass. Will add an air locker when I feel like it.

Since I spend 98% of my driving on the pavement and I prefer a firm, well dampened ride with minimal corner lean and brake dive, the TRD Sport has the best suspension out of any Tacoma model for my use. The Sport will also be better for towing my camper due to the firmer suspension. I also think it looks the best, the Tupperware fenders and bumper on the Off Road look really, really cheap to my eyes. A diff lock that works in all drive modes would be great but one that only works in 4 low is almost useless to me.

To each their own but I find much better value for money in the TRD Sport.

The OR is Fugly in My opinion. Looks unfinished. But it does have crawl control..... I would never use crawl control. I crawl around Costco and Home Depot..Hell I don't need a 4X4. Most All the wooded trails can be run with a 2WD CRV here.

Nothing wrong with the Sport as a 4x4. You will be able to go most places an OR might traverse.

Ha, well put. From everything I read on the 4Runner forum most people that have use it once to try it and never use it again. I didn't have it on my FJ and I never had any problems getting out of anything.

    Not exactly...
The reason it was hard to turn on dry pavement in 4WD was because the front and rear driveshafts were 'locked' together (not the differentials). The front drive shaft rotates more in a turn then does the back. In a part-time 4WD vehicle, the transfer case (where the front and back driveshafts come together at the back end of the tranny) divides power 50-50. This is why 4WDs are better off road than AWDs (All Wheel Drive or Full Time 4WD ...which have a middle or third differential so the BINDING from turning in 4WD is eliminated). Power is not evenly split so AWD is more for performance on curves or on snowy roads.

You turning on dry/ solid surface was hard because you were forcing the tires to all move the same! Next time, go into H2 when you need to turn on a dry/solid surface.

A-TRAC only is active in Low Range, and only when wheels slip from loss of traction. Keep the A-TRAC button depressed so every time you go into L4, it will be active. A-TRAC works with open differentials, so steering is easy. A locked differential will reduce steering ability, and is only advised as a last resort, emergency device.

I'm ordering a sport and adding gears and a rear locker. Love the sport look with the hood scoop , painted flairs. Hate the made to fade cheap black flares.

I wanted the following: a 4x4 truck, with a double cab, factory tow package and a manual transmission. In Canada, that meant a Sport either with, or without the sunroof. No other options were available, hence the Sport. After driving a Ranger, the Taco Sport is far superior on the highway, while towing, and off-road, and it looks far better too. Oh, and what a sweet transmission! Nuff said.

Isn't it funny how they make the Sport the only model choice for so many, sometimes by force (no Double Cab Off Road in Canada and no Long Bed Double Cab (before this year)?

You Sport guys are paying the same as us Off Road guys are but while we get a locking differential, hydraulic brake booster, A-TRAC (or MTS/CRAWL), 16" off roading tire size wheels, and Bilstein shocks for the money... You guys get a decorative (fake) hood scoop and painted trim (ie. all ornamental and none of it functional)... yes and 17" wheels and different Bilstein shocks (so they say).

I just don't get the fascination with a scoop that is all for looks rather than having a most awesome cliff climbing, mud bogging, stuck-resistant truck. That's okay, you are helping Toyota stay in business, with a much higher profit margin on the Sport TRDs vs the Off Road TRDs, I would bet.

Eh, all that crap is overrated and I'm changing the tires/rims and suspension anyways.

the dealer had a 2012 metal flake green dblc sport, 18" wheels, bought it on site, i didnt care for the ride, was rough riding on the 265- 60-18s. so i went to a 265 70-18 cooper at3, at 40,000 miles, big dif, no more spilled coffee, still lots of payments so no serious wheeling. speaking of lockers, i had a 2003 off rd, i was always curious if the locker wires could be run to a switch for manual control, never got around to messing with it. A any thoughts guys?
