I agree. As long as there is a decent quality in the design, engineering and build, almost any vehicle will last a very long time if maintained and not abused. Even some that are abused, but also maintained, will last a very long time. Only once in my life have I ever had any kind of major breakdown or failure of a critical component. An old mustang transmission was rebuilt by the shop's FNG and he screwed it up, the input shaft broke and left me stranded in San Francisco. They paid for everything, including my hotel and taxi and flatbed haul the car back to their shop for a proper rebuild.

I would be surprised if my current Tacoma did not reach 300,000 miles. I don't mud or crawl, and rarely tow, and it's kept in the garage. May need some new bits here and there along the way (alternator, u-joints, wheel bearings, etc), but it will get there, and beyond. I plan to keep it until it falls apart. Yes I love my Tacoma. It's got 122,000 miles and it runs and feels nearly brand new.

I bought my 2013 base 4x4 with the intention of keeping it 20 or 30 years, but I doubt the frame will last that long.

Unfortunately, you misread and misunderstood my post, also an epic fail.

1996 vehicles are not modern, but closer to antique. They contain less computers , emissions, and made in China junk, making them inherently more reliable.

We'll see how many modern Tacomas, like 2015, make it to 2035, with the future unobtainium computer and emissions parts.

I was holding out hope that you might not have been serious after reading through that thread. ECUs have been in use longer than 20 years. In fact if you read through the thread that you posted a mechanic chimes in and said he has only replaced 4 ECUs in his career 3 being GM. I think you should be more concerned about your frame.

This discussion is probably pointless, but those earlier ECUs were simpler and built in Japan, where quality was much better than what we get today with China ECUs. Only time will truly tell.

Realizing that inevitably there will be problems with my Tacomas, I choose to stay positive and hopeful. My goal is for one if not both of those trucks to outlast me.

    I love my Tacomas.

How many miles did you have on the previous three before you had to start spending money and fixing things on them? 100k?

My first one was totaled by a drunk driver after I had it 2 yrs.
2nd one I had 11 yrs. I put tires, shocks, wipers and battery. ( no brakes)
3rd one I had 18 yrs. I put tires, shocks, wipers , batteries , brakes ,starter and I also had timing belt replaced at 60,000 miles.
Im on my fourth one now with my 2015

All money spent was basic maintance items except the starter. All of the above had regular oil changes also.

I also sell them before 100k miles because you get more and that's when I figure why press my luck.
