Rode my motorcycle on Christmas morning, Monday it was 6 degrees when I woke up, and then yesterday it snowed 6 inches. Garden's not doing a whole lot at the moment. :notsure:

Waiting for warmer temps here in N Kalifornia, seeds came in a couple weeks ago. Looked over my order, where's the corn? Dang, left it off I guess, nothing on the packing slip. Still getting in the 20's, but at least no snow on the plot, but that can change, it's only Feb. Can start peas in April.

I remodeled my mobile home last Spring and replaced most appliances, including my gas range and fridge. The good thing about that range was the pilot lights. I recalled a few years ago about experiments in High School where we placed seeds in paper towels inside a Baggie and observed them when they sprouted, same with germinating my bean and okra seed the last few years. Okra, when placed in a warm spot, will germinate overnight and beans in a day and a half about. Nice, especially when living here in the mountains where soil temps are still cool in late May. I have to figure something this year now to get a jump start with beans.

We took our old celery root after cutting the stalks and stuck them in water and they're growing new plants.

Did the same with green onions. Green onions are growing like crazy, gotta be an inch every day.

Pretty fun to watch, probably harvest some green onion this weekend.

Kale and chard and some lettuces still producing in the boxes. Hoping tomatoes are a better yield this year than they were last year.

Going to build a worm bin this weekend.

I start maters about late March to set out in red Wall's O'water in early May, taking them off later in the month after frost is gone, in N CA. May do broccoli again this year, that is much earlier. I'm retiring end of March, so will have more time to get things done in a timely manner. Peas can go in early April depending on how wet the soil is from snow melting off. Spuds can go in early May, hoping to fend off gophers, corn around Memorial Day under black plastic and beans late May for warmer soil temps by then.

50 degrees here today, and in the 40's yesterday. I'm itching to start some seeds but I NEED to wait or else they'll overgrow their pots before I can transplant them.

Are your boxes big enough to get a tiller in them, or do you have a tiny tiller? If I did that, I'd have to have something at the bottom to deter gophers. I can start broccoli in a month and if the soil was drier, get some greens going in a month. Just have to figure a easy way to fence the garden area to keep pesky deer out. No use planting anything until a fence is up. I'd trample quite a bit working.

Boxes are 4x8 feet, varying depths as a result of slope. I don't have a vole issue, but did put weed barrier down. I do have plenty of deer which decimated my broccoli last year. Not sure how I'm going to prevent it this year.

I have a small tiller, ~16" wide, and does everything I need it to do.

I've had my Troybilt Pony for 12 years or more now, not a wide one, that's all I could afford at the time. Deer are death on my maters, strawberries, even took chunks out of large pumpkins one year. Lead, a sure fix.
