OBA -> On Board Air Mega Thread & BS

I'm planning on welding a crossmember and mounting the tank to that

 

That's the route I'm leaning. I just don't have a welder which complicates it a bit. I'm actually thinking a cross member would give room for two 5 gallon tank. Maybe one air and one water

 

Yeah you could fit that for sure

 

That's what I'm thinking but we will see. A pressurized water tank would be nice but something I'll add way down the road. I have to many projects as is!

How much was this set up total? I want an air compressor anyways, I was thinking of just getting a jump pack with a air compressor.

 

If you're gonna do anything other than fill a basketball or bike tire I don't think you will be happy with the jump pack compressor same goes for a walmart cig lighter compressor. They just don't have the CFM needed to do to fill tires in a decent time.

 

The air tank is a double edged sword. I've got a viair I think it's a 50 or 75% but either way,
The air tank hurts me more than helps sometimes. A tank is great for keeping a large volume of high pressure to be used at once. I've used mine twice to seat a beat I threw on my 33's.

But, when it comes to airing up tires, it adds 5 gallons of volume to your tire that the little compressor has to pressurize.

The CORRECT way to incorporate an air tank would be to put a lower range pressure switch in the main line independent to the tank manifold (you don't have to flow air through the tank like many do, you can tee it in anywhere).
Then use a normally open solenoid to isolate the tank and a higher range pressure switch in the tank.

High range pressure switch controls the main compressor relay for on / off at 70 / 100 psi
Solenoid normally open for failsafe operation
Secondary low range pressure switch controls the solenoid "backwards" to close / open at 40 / 60 psi.

That'll give you all the high pressure volume that'll automatically cut the tank off once it drains the pressure out, then pop it open again to pressurize once you quit airing something up.


That being said, fuck all that. Just do what I do and lay a wet rag over the compressor and dump water on it every couple minutes and hold ice on it from the cooler. I've been religious about keeping it cold like that and I've made my little viair 100% duty for the last 5 years.
Heat kills these little things, especially because they're no- lube types.

 

Not having looked up really anything about compressors my thought would be to have a compressor and run lines to 2 1gal(maybe 1.5) tanks along with a shut off valve and a quick connect before it gets to the tanks, so I dont have to fill them up if I just need a little air. Of course have quick connect coming off the tanks as well.

 

Just my tulle of thumb...find the positives in a mistake! I'll have to do more work but I'll have the potential for more options. Either 10gal of air or 5 air and 5 water

 

Where is everyone finding the best prices on lines and fittings. Need to wire up a ARB twin with a tank, and need to start sourcing fittings and lines.

That's where Ive been looking, thought maybe some vendor or shop was doing a package deal with all the fun bits.

 

Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, HF

 

I used Milton industries hi Flo brass fittings from Amazon. Very good. The husky stuff at my local home depot was cheap and of questionable quality. I think any synthetic air hose is fine. I'd Avoid PVC hose, very cheap.

 

I've bought al my fittings from Amazon and home depot...probably have 40$ in fittings easy now lol

 

Also try your local big-rig truck stops and shops. They have all the DOT rated air lines and fittings there if that's the route you wanted to go.

 

Finished my oba today...EVERYONE of my push on fitting leaks horribly. They came with my tank. 4 are 10mm and two are 4mm

What do I do?
I do not wanna run new lines

 

Can't you just get new fittings? I have the Viair ones and they've held up well (knock on wood)
