ECT switch on dashboard

Hey guys,
I think when I first bought my 04 Jan of 2015 when I read the manual it said that ECT switch gives the truck a boost or something along those lines so to speak. Just want to know your thoughts and how it has worked for you. Advantages and disadvantages. I don't think I have tried mine before because I was thinking it would burn more gas. Mine is a 4x4 and already burns more fuel than a 2x4 I'm sure.

When I hit the ECT switch in my truck, it changes the shift points. When getting on the freeway with the ECT on, it lets the engine reach a higher rpm before the auto trans shifts. ECT on with OD off does real well for me in terms of getting up to speed.

 

Pretty much this. My understanding is that it raises the shift point up about 2mph per gear. Not a lot of extra but, helps a little.

 

Is it mainly for towing? Or everyday driving also?

 

I run mine with the ECT 'on' all the time. I think it up shifts too early when its off.

 

ECT holds the shift "points" longer to achieve higher speed. Your manual should explain the function (if the PO left it in there) but mainly it's to prevent gear hunting. It helps more for towing and I didn't really see any difference with stop/go/slow driving traffic so it's debatable for non-towing use. If you leave it on and drive highway you will notice the trans will kick down more often to hold speed (at least here where we don't have completely flat roads).

Scratch off the ECT and write "NITRO BOOSTER" on it. Then just hit the button and stomp the gas. The chicks will dig it

I'd typically use it on longer uphill grades. I've been experimenting lately and leaving the ECT on 24/7. Haven't done any figuring but it 'seems' my tank of gas lasts longer... The tacoma engines do well at higher RPM's IMO

Mine hasn't turned on in months. Don't know why, can't figure it out.
