I mean no disrespect. I get the whole hunting thing and have no issues with it for the most part. Just the whole name, and truck camo etc etc. It's like a video game. It's awesome.

It's just the major metropolitan ones. Inland of the mountains in California isn't all that different politically from Arizona.

There's a lot they will never understand because they all seem to think the world revolves around those places.

IMHO, the issue lies in the whole point of Atkinson cycle, which is to REDUCE air and fuel in the combustion chamber to what is necessary to keep the engine turning (thus netting better fuel efficiency). A super-/turbocharger does the opposite, increasing air/fuel in the combustion chamber to make more power. Anyone working on a SC kit is going to have to rewrite the entire fuel map, not just to keep it in Otto mode, but also to account for dual injection system. This is not even considering the engine hardware and whether it is robust enough for forced induction. A lot more variables with this engine, that's for sure.

I think the engine would be more than capable of handling a turbo setup. Take a look at the build sheet. Almost all of the internals, including the connecting rods, are forged. That's actually pretty impressive for a "minivan motor" or whatever people refer to the 3.5 as nowadays. I think it's fine, but I don't have mine loaded down. yet.

I liked my "slouch" 1GRFE (it was far from slow) and I'm even more stoked on my VQ40DE.

The smaller 2GRFKS and added weight were enough for me to lose interest in the Tacoma for the mean time. Would make sense if they dramatically reduced the curb weight.

When Toyota said they were coming out with a new Tacoma I was hoping they'd put at least a 25 gallon tank in it. That would have been a really nice improvement.

Yeah 3 gallons probably wouldn't have been worth the amount of redesign to fit the larger tank.

This is maybe a little off topic from OP, but seems like you've got two problems, the gutlessness and range (or maybe not!). I've been interested to see what people have done to extend range on their tacos (maybe additional fuel capacity where spare is located OEM? maybe some better place?). With 10mpg in no-man's-land Utah, might be another cool mod :)

I don't think 4.30 gearing would be deep enough with all the weight you've added. If you're going to consistently keep the truck weighed down with at least 1500 lbs of extra equipment it would probably be worth getting a stronger rear axle and selling your current one to someone who thought he bought a Trophy Truck. I know that Toyota recently started using a slightly larger axle (8.9"?) on some Tacomas but I would want at least a Toyota 9.5" or Dana 60 rear end on a truck that (likely) weights over 6000 lbs, especially when the GVWR is only 5600 lbs. I'm of the opinion that you can never have too much axle. Input torque and load ratings vary with duty cycle but based upon what the Dana Corporation has declared the semi-float Dana 44(8.8") and Dana 60 (9.75") can handle I would surmise that your current rear axle wasn't designed to deal with the loads you're placing upon it. Nice looking truck by the way.

    I like this: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/73665-Custom-35-gallon-gas-tank-for-09-Tacoma

As much as there is shared from gen2 to gen3 I'm willing to bet it would work just fine.

Isn't the compression ratio 11.5:1 or something like that? That's pretty high to try to be adding boost to. Usually charged engines are 8:1.

Doesn't matter if it can tow 6k,max tongue weight is in the range of 650. There's a lot more to proper hauling than tow ratings. There's GVWR and GAWR. Neither of which should ever be exceeded.

4.56 or 4.88 gears, and take the tactical rack off when not in use. Most your mpg loss is probably during acceleration or pulling grades.
