But try and walk around with a revolver on your hip and all the fruit cakes will shit their pants. In Arizona it's it doesn't raise an eyebrow.

Op love the truck man. Unfortunately there is a cause and effect with all things in life. You have built a serious off road vehicle and a side effect is bad gass mileage. I hope you find a fix that doest cost a ton of money.

5600 lb for GVWR.. For a v6, that means recommended additional payload of up to only 1200 to 1500 lb..

All numbers are in the brochure..

And did you see OP mention how much weight he thinks he added? This isn't rocket science.

This thread wouldn't exist had they put the 4.0 from the 4Runner in it.

That's what I was wondering. It's going to take a scientist and an ape load of cash to do, I'm afraid.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    1. Gears - this will shift power towards low end while removing from top. on the end you are more likely to end up with MPG in single digits and range of 200 miles on a tank.
    2. Intakes/Exhaust - intakes and exhaust mods stopped providing any extra power for a decade now. New cars are tuned so efficiently that not much can be done there. Plus car ECM will always insist on getting best MPG.
    3. increasing octane/fuel additives - well that is complete waste of money.
    4. power adders - like turbo ? Supercharger? I don't think any of these will happen anytime soon, best company URD has been working on 2009+ upgrade since well 2009. Once Toyota bolted emission air injection, and extra garbage to ECM that was it. I seriously doubt you will see turbo for that 3.5 in this decade.

So there are only two viable options here.
    1. Get 2gen truck back..
    2. or if you need new than get something else like Chevy Colorado Diesel (I think your wheels will swap to it) with 600 mile range, and crap load of torque to haul all your things you will be happy.

    my $ .02

Gears will always help when you go from 30" stock tires to 33" and I don't know if you know what OP does for a living, but my suspicion is that going to a diesel is not going to be as stealthy as a gas engine. No matter what it sounds like from inside the cabin, these little diesels are definitely louder than gas engines, which speaking of aftermarket air intakes, most of the baffles and such in an OE intake actually take noise away, hence the restriction of air. Not only that, the truck is paid for and Colorados are crap! They are still a cheap crappy little truck like they've always been, now with a better engine! They've always tried to compete with the imports but they just will never do what Toyota and other importers have done for years: Build quality and rigidity into their trucks. You'll see in 10 years a bunch of these trucks in the scrap yard that peeps have canibalized the diesel out of, and all of these Tacomas will still be on the road, and well past 10 years. I like my GMC just fine for towing and hauling my big camper (at 9 mpg), but I've worked at dealership level before and have worked on Colorados and Canyons a lot, and I've never seen one outlast a Toyota or Nissan. Maybe that's why their resale numbers suck. Just my 2.5 cents.

Or, instead of the Tacoma being designed around this one persons needs, OP could have bought a 4runner or other vehicle. The 4runner engine is 7 years old. Don't think they are going to put an older engine into a new generation truck.

It's already been confirmed URD is working on a supercharger or turbo for the 3.5 v6. Post number 57.

Diesel colorado towing capacity is only 700 pounds more than the v6 version. Not worth it imo. Still limited by frame and the fact it's a midsize. If you're going to tow, get a fullsize.

My point was that URD has been working for past 7 years on something for 2009+ trucks with updated 1GR. in 7 years years there was no news, and 1GR is much simpler engine that 2gr-FKS.
So chances that URD miraculously comes up with supercharger or turbo for 2gr-fks in less than 7 years are the same of that winning Powerball, and mega millions on the same day with the same set of numbers.
Highly unlikely there will be anything.
700 lb is 10% increase and diesel can haul it.
OP used to have 2gen truck, so if he does not mind used one he can go back to 2gen.

Bottom line tossing money into the current truck in hopes of improving 3.5L engine is silly, short of engine swap everything else is going to be just waste of money and increase in aggravation. IMHO

I have some bits to add. I think your best bet would be a regear and a premium fuel tune. However, The 2gr can take boost. Lotus used supercharged 2grfse's for years, those used both port and direct injection as they do now. A supercharger will be available sooner than later. Mostly due to the fact that 5 of toyotas engine ECU's were successfully tuned in the last 3 months. This has made the market easier to enter for supercharger companies. Big time. It's laughable to think that the simulated Atkinson cycle will make tuning impossible, it is in fact, ran by a computer. Intake and exhaust is much more worth while once you have the ECU unlocked. RR Racing and Tuning tech solutions are getting 60 hp gains on the rcf and isf with a tune and all of the air flow goodies. The IS350 gains are less but it's also factory tuned for premium fuel.

It was recently announced that the new Toyota Highlander is getting the 2grfks with a new 8 speed transmission. Imagine how the gear hunting fearing members would of enjoyed that? The 4Runner will get the same engine. It was just a matter of the Tacoma being redesigned in a convenient time for toyotas newest, most CAFE friendly, v6.

That makes a lot of sense but is it really true the 4runner will get the same engine? The new tacoma is already heavier than the 2nd gen and the 4runner is even heavier than the new tacoma...i can't imagine how that will work out unless they shed some weight off the 4runner when it gets updated.
