As someone who wants to get into editing more of my photos should I start with something like this? Any idea on how easy it is to learn?

 

You need Lightroom, Photoshop or Aperture to run it. It runs inside those programs.

 

Gotcha didn't realize that. Didn't really look into it too much. Lightroom seems to be what most use?

 

Lightroom will probably do all you need to do starting out. Photoshop is a lot more advanced and at times can be more complicated to do things. Great program but has a huge learning curve to it. Start with Lightroom and I'm sure you will be happy for quite a while.

I use PS exclusively at work and LR almost exclusively for my own personal work at home only bringing the images into PS if they need additional work. You can do a lot with LR plus the investment is easier to start with.

 

Hopefully, you all got your free Nik software....

 

I've had it for a few years. Glad to see they are giving it out for free now.

 

Is it actual software? Or just filters and presets for LR?

 

Actual software that runs within LR, PS and Aperture.

Oh lame you have to export from LR to use them. Was hoping it would be non destructive just like LR so I wouldn't end up with 8 copies of the same photo after using all of the plugins.

 

It would definitely be better to use the sidecar files but free is free and it's pretty decent software.

 

Yea it works great in PS since it just adds the effect as a layer. Works very well actually.

But doesn't fit my work flow very well. PS is just too damn slow for me when i do photos. LR is just so much more appealing for most things. And i hate exporting files so that i have Raw files and then edited tiffs. Yet another great feature of LR. I just upload direct to flickr through LR. No extra files. Well, okay, no extra photo files. Just the LR reference file.

But the nik stuff is pretty nice. It makes PS very easy to use which i think is the best part about it. Takes a lot of the learning curve of PS out.

What do you guys think? Any improvements I should work on?
