Subbed because I try to stay involved with all the transmission threads .
Removing the battery terminals or clearing the memory makes sense for the guys who are low on fluid .
The transmission was designed to learn the owners shift characteristics with the transmission full of fluid at the proper level .
If you guys have low fluid , your transmission is going to work like crap and there is no possible way your transmission adaptive learning will adapt properly to your driving characteristics with low fluid . Your transmission will feel like a bag of sh^t but the computer thats learning your driving habits doesnt know your transmission is low on fluid . You are going to get soggy delayed shifts , clunky downshifts etc etc . Your computer thinks you are grandparents out on a Sunday drive
I can not stress enough how important it is to make sure your trans is filled correctly even if this means learning to check it yourself . Get your buddy to help you , get your wife to help you or suffer the consequences
With this said , I am not positive the dealer is clearing the adaptive learning after they top off your fluid . Some dealers will , others will not .
I will add this to the poll so new members just viewing this now will know to have the dealer clear the adaptive memory after the fluid is topped off .

I've seen you in every thread about the transmissions with very useful info about them and assume you deal with them for a living? Anyway it's one of the reasons I love these forums is cause of people like you who take the time to be on here and help people out its good stuff. I'm bringing mine to the dealer this morning again, first time they couldn't "replicate" the problem this time I just said to check the fluid I'll pay for it get SICK of the run around. My question is does disconnecting the battery and waiting 30 mins and what the dealer does the same thing or is what they do better or more effective?

No offense to your dealer but there have been a number of people who have had there dealer tell them that it was okay only to find out that the dealer either never checked it or used a scan tool which is not accurate. Dealers don't want to do it because it can be time consuming. Hell if you lived near me I would do the check for you and bet a beer your dealer fibbed to you.

This happened to me. Took it to the dealer and went for a test drive with a tech to show them the issues. Tech agreed it could be low fluid and they will check it. 7 HOUR LATER i get my truck back and they said fluid is at proper level. When i got home i got under the truck to look at the overflow/check plug to see if i could see signs that they checked it. Drain, fill, and overflow plugs were completely untouched and it was very obvious they didnt check it. Took it back a week later and gave them hell about it. They finally checked it and it was 1qt low. I doubt they cleared the adaptive learning.

Many of them either don't check it at all or just use a tech-stream hookup which others
have said won't check the level properly, maybe not even at all?

I took mine in with about 750 miles on it on Friday and they checked it Saturday AM. They did not specify a quantity, but the report says they "adjusted the transmission fluid level and reset transmission ECU", so it must have been low. My R to D hesitation is definitely gone, and the gear hunting seems to be gone as well. The shift patterns just seem much more stable and solid now.

Unbelievable. I'm gonna crawl under the truck this morning and see if I can tell if they checked it manually or not and removed the plug.

Just crawled under the truck. No way of telling if they really checked or not. There are no markings on the overflow plug to determine if it's actually been removed or not.

Seriously though, I'm just going to drive the shit out of the truck and when the transmission starts having real problems demand they replace the entire thing. This is on them. A simple thing like checking the trans fluid could have solved this issue. Maybe they did, or maybe they didn't, but all I know is my truck is still symptomatic. Either way, this is my first and last Toyota.

My question is since there is a separate refill plug and overflow plug, why can someone just add fluid into the refill plug while leaving the overflow plug open, and if they accidentally overfill the transmission with fluid, just keep the overflow plug open until the excess runs out, then close the overflow plug? My guess is this would only work if it accurate and able to be done while the truck is not running and is sitting cold.

Your better read the other tranny posts .. there is a proper way to do it... and it's not hard... just learn how to do it and you'll never trust a dealer again..

If it involves me having to buy a reader and what not I'm not interested.

I'm also unsuccessful in being able to find the fill plug on my transmission. I located the overflow plug but for the life of me cant see the fill plug with the 'WS' on it.

You don't need a reader... all you need is a 5" piece of wire, some patience, and to read the proper procedure on here....
The fill plug in on pass. side near the rear and high up there... a 24mm I think, but a 15/16 will work...

You have to READ how to do it on here man.. It's easy....

Read this.... it's for the 2 gen, but basically the same... It's really not hard at all....!!

It depends heavily on the transmission fluid temperature...Hot fluid expands much more than cold fluid.

This is an interesting video from Toyota about the proper way to check fluid levels...

Look for a green wire in the passenger side of the transmission. Where that connects is the general location of the fill plug. Not to beat the horse more but when your dealer said he checked it did he say it was part of the dealer prep pre delivery inspection? Or did you have a service appointment? Did they give you a copy of the work order? In order to do the check the service tech will replace the overflow plug gasket. There would be a part # for it on the work order. It part # 35178-30010

Do not do this! The fluid drains back into the pan when the engine is off. Part of the procedure is to run the trans through all the gears (P-R-N-D-S-N)before putting it into trans check mode. If you open the overflow plug while the engine is off and cold fluid will pour out. I know the check procedures seem somewhat overwhelming. Been there. But after doing it and following the instructions it was simple and worked smoothly. All together it took about 1/2 hour. Most of the time is waiting the 10 plus minutes for the trans to get up to temp. I have the actual Toyota service advisory for the AC60F transmission in my iBooks.

I did it myself and encourage others to learn how. I just don't trust dealers, my bad, but personal experience and others experiences made me this way.
That being said I have read where people have ask the dealer to do it and agreeing to pay the shop rate if the fluid check is okay. But if the fluid check is not okay they don't charge you a cent. And you want to watch them do it. No scantool crap. Familiarize yourself with the procedure so you know they are doing it correctly.
