I'm going to go out on a limb and say he liked the Evo better since that one didn't get traded.

A kid I work with has one with just a simple tune the thing boogies. Unfortunately he's gone above and beyond just a simple tune lately. Plus everything is so expensive for them.

Actually the 2012 WRX was a great daily driver, I had the 5-dr (hatch/wagon) version and it hauled whatever I needed for the time frame I needed. However the motor went after 60k and after disassembling the motor it was due to an imbalance (6 grams off!) in the rotating assembly causing it to wear unevenly on a bearing surface. Honestly the car was detuned when the motor blew because I was breaking a clutch in and running on wastegate pressure as opposed to 18psi which it was tuned on before I replaced the clutch. Subaru refused to warranty it so I dropped a brand new block in and sold it, I had a foul taste with the car after all that happened, especially with the dealership after I had my whole group of friends, customer and my shop bought WRX/STI's from that one dealer. The 2005 Evo MR... is not a good daily driver. It has 136k, pulls great and runs great when being driven spiritedly however it just really sucks for daily driving. Obviously its moderately modified so being a pain to drive is a given with the pucked clutch etc. In the end it has gone through more than the Subaru ever went through and the motor, turbo and trans still hold as if brand new from day 1.

My specialty is modified Evo's and Subaru's since I work part time for Kaizen Tuning. We dabble with GTR's, Evo's and Subaru's all day with a few exceptions of other imports and some domestic vehicles. Personally I think a Subaru is a great daily or lightly modified car however it takes a LOT more money to make the same power as any evo 8/9/10 all day. Personally if I wanted the race-car feeling and the power for price ratio to be in my favor I would take the evo all day. The Evo 10 is a lot more mature and a whole lot smoother for daily driving with seats that are more comfortable and amenities that the evo 8/9 never even saw. The evo X's SST automatic transmission blows at anything more than 400whp but with basic bolt ones you'll be up at around 350 so you should be fine. Upgrading the SST is a huge pain and a pretty penny but doable and we have done it.

my accord is a 5 speed and the truck is a 6 speed (and my last million cars). i've gotten so used to the close ratio 6 that it feels weird when i'm in the accord

I love having the 6spd in the evo for highway driving or when I spend time on the track. For smaller courses like autocross its kind of a pain having to shift to third sometimes on longer straights. The 6spd is also a lot weaker (4th gear lacks enough cooling) than the 5spd. The new evo 10's transmission is solid up to 450-500whp, I have a customer pushing 550 on his stock trans. You'll blow the rear diff before the trans on those cars.
