Pretty sure REI has recommended bag sizes depending on the days of continuous use for trips..

You could start there, I'd probably start with a 50L bag and see how it looks. You can bring normal clothes to occupy space for clothes you don't yet have (if applicable).

Are you doing 3-4 days by yourself or with a group?

Are you guys splitting gear or each carrying your own stuff?

I'd probably start with talking to him and seeing what he's carrying, his pack size, and what he plans on doing with shared gear.

That'll dictate your pack size need pretty fairly.

Deuter ACT is an adjustable bag, I think there are some others as well.. something like a 50+10 or that kind of thing, so you can expand it for larger gear needs.

Good quality bags also, comparable to Osprey.

    No love for Deuter?

Not much difference in the two brands to me, both are bombproof, similarly equipped and similarly priced.

Osprey has far more marketing, though.

I have the deuter ACT 40+10. I like it a lot. Only gone up to 3 nights with it. However I believe I will be able to fit enough for 4 nights now that I will not be carrying a tent but a hammock instead.

I tried a couple of deuters when i was looking for my latest pack. A very knowledgeable person on staff at the shop was helping to fit me and the deuter packs just didnt fit me well. Tried a gregory and it was better but the osprey was perfect.

@ChamYota I love the osprey atmos 50, best pack i have ever had by far. However you should definitely try on several different pack loaded up with 20 to 40 lbs

Deuter was one of the ones that fit me best and great beginning pack for backpacking was what I was told. I am happy with it. I don't believe its that heavy either.

Deuter is the oldest pack making company. Solid product.
Osprey has one of the best warranties in the industry.

But your camping gear first. (Tent, stove, water treatment blah blah blah).
The volume of this year will dictate the size pack you can get. Don't get too much extra space. You'll be tempted to fill it with crap (more weight) than you'll need.

Buy once... Hahaha! Nope. Not going to happen! You'll wind up with enough packs to outfit a scout troop! Fit is incredibly important! Get sized for your torso. Packs come small, medium, large. This is NOT like clothes sizes. It's a specific torso length. And just because you are a small with one brand, you may be a medium in another. (I wear a small Gregory buy medium Osprey...)

Go with what is most comfortable on YOU! You have to carry it, not us.
ULA makes an incredible pack, I love them. But they just don't fit/sit right on me. :(

If you're REI member, you can use the 20% in store. And later use it online too! (I did just this last week!)

Now. You need to let us know what you got. Where you went. And photos are a must!

    I come and go.. :anonymous:

    Welcome either way!

My first pack was a Jansport external frame with a single compartment, a top flap that tied down with rope and was faded red nylon.

It was old school cool and I quickly outgrew it, then I went into Osprey and now settled into an REI Flash pack at half the weight of the previous Aether 70. Carries great, way lighterweight than the Osprey which frankly was heavier than it needed to be, and is a little smaller pack size also.
