Overhead Compass/Temp Fix

Just a FYI, there are at least two versions (part numbers) of the part, One for earlier years, then another for 2009, and I'm assuming at least one more for the latter 2nd GENS with the white display vice the red/orange one? One big difference I heard/read somewhere is that the "newer" (2009? +) one gets the actual temperature from the AC, whereas earlier models got it from an outside temperature sensor. Of course, the AC has to get its temperature from a sensor as well, but it does leave some room to doubt interchangability.

Cut the headlights "ON" signal and insert a push button. If you use your driving or headlights during the day it prevents the display from dimming so you can still see the damn thing.

Been Searching for a headliner removel thread and there arnt any. Must be damn easy, cause I cant see how to do it.

 

You don't have to remove the headliner, the console comes off by itself. Remove the Phillips head screw in the aftmost sunglasses holder. Then pull down from the front (two metal clips), hinge the console down, taking care to protect the plastic hook clips in the rear. Release the two electrical connections.

 

Right got that, but Im looking to add this and need to get the headliner down to cut a spot for the new console part. Went thru the entire Hanes book and it tell how to either. Mabey just wing it, never worked before but HEY,,, why the hell not. XD

I tried the re-solder fix on my '07 a year or so back and it didn't work for some reason. I just bought a new unit from local dealer for 145.00 and will install today hopefully. In first posts dealer fix cost of 900 or so mentioned, sounds way high to me but what do I know. Also am not seeing images on sticky on this for some reason ?

 

The below is the important part. I did go to radio shack after having an attempt to re-sue the 510 first lasted a few days. The fix with the radio shack resistors has lasted about two years to date...

Use new components! Go to Radio Shack or similar and get a couple 51 ohm lead wire(axial) resistors. 47 ohm will work, too. See the image below for the color code. The last band can be gold or silver. I recommend 1/4 watt, as the leads are smaller gauge and easier to work with.



The resistors are in parallel, so you can lay the leads against each other and solder to the board. *NOTE* these resistor values are for Tacomas; other vehicles may vary. See the not-so-clear images below for guidance.





-If you use your old original SMT resistors, they WILL fail again. The ends will have oxidized and solder won’t stick well. Unfortunately cleaning/sanding won’t work, the layer of metal is too thin.

Another satisfied customer here! Did the repair on my 2006 TRD Sport and it worked great, despite my (below average) soldering skills.

 

After soldering the old flat resistors about 4 times for the fix one of them finally got lost. I took wnytacoma's advice from 2 posts above. I purchased quantity 20 51 ohm 1/4 watt resistors off of Ebay for 1.75 and 2 dollars shipping. I soldered the new resistor in where the lost flat one was and it worked perfect. Total cost for the fix is less than 5 bucks and I have 19 more resistors for spares.

 

My 510 had completely fallen off and was rattling around in there. Did my best to do a neat job. Dabbed a little extra on the other 510 as well. Plugged it back in to test it and sure enough, Worked like a charm! Thanks again TW!

But has anybody figured out how to get it off the calibration mode? Temp works great and I can see it every day, but who knows what direction I'm headed.

 

Looks like I'm taking mine apart this weekend display went out on the way to work this morning.

 

I've fur an extra one that works, if you can't fix yours.

 

I just fixed mine after 2 years of it not working. Only one 510 resistor was lose on one end. The copper pad on the PCB was curled up and it fell off when I touched it. I scraped the PCB to remove some of coating to expose the trace and bridged some solder to it. It works now but I don't think it will last for long since he SMD resistors get extremely hot when the compass was powered on.
