@BabyTaco i have the hilux snorkel on my 4 banger. Template seemed pretty accurate to me and I was able to plumb it right into where the stock air intake enters the air box. It was tight and took a little finess er... muscle... But I got it to work. I used the exhaust tube that came with the snorkel and clear rtv silicon to to get a safe seal. I'll get some pictures for you in the morning.

I took a picture but it doesn't really help. Basically what I did was cut a peice of the 3 inch exhaust tewb that came with the snorkel. I cut a piece 2.5 inches long and set it into the intake side of the air box. Then I took a block of wood and a hammer and really jammed it in the air box. The inlet is tapered so it's in there very very tight. Then i sealed it up with silicone. After that I was able to just attach the rubber elbow off of the snorkel right to the exhaust tewb with a hose clamp. I also had to bend the inner fender back a little where the rubber comes threw just to gain a little clearance.

Good to know . Still unsure of what I want. After talking to John today I might hold off and have a look at the cowl area and see how easy it would be to route into that. Then complement the system with a nice, high quality air filter. The cruiser is probably going to be hanging around for the summer at a minimum so I have a bit of time to work out some different options.

Nice! How's the truck run with the 4.88s. I'm sure it's still No race car but I'm getting ready for a regear so any info is good to me

Great, just like stock. Who are you regearing through? Local? Yourself?

Alright, pieced together a solution thanks to @45acp. He came by Laramie and suggested some alternative solutions and pointed me in the direction to this filter.

The plan (in my head) is to purchase a used CAI intake tube (throttle body to filter). This will give me an easy hook up to maf sensor, filter, and all the other bs. Then hook this bad boy up to that. I can't find the CFM for these but they are made for 6.6l diesels so it shouldn't be a problem for my truck. Only concern is how it looks in the middle. Not sure if that is a hole straight through...

Then run a tubing from there into a air cleaner. Something like the FJ Cruiser cyclone air cleaner or Donaldson also has one.

Finally, I would run it into the cowl. I am not sure the easiest way to do this since I don't have the truck. My worries are snow in the winter dropping into the cowl area, then getting sucked in on morning starts. Doubt it would be a problem but a simple fix would be having a attachment that could bring it straight up and attach a hood on it.

To sum it up, air will move from:
Cowl (Should be clean air)->Air Cleaner(Remove any dust that does come through) -> Donaldson inline filter -> Volant CAI tube

I will probably do this in steps. First would be the Volant pipe and filter. That way I could run around and not worry much about the engine. I may do the air cleaner and cowl piping at the same time but not sure. May have an exhaust shop bend the pip for the cowl, then cut it at a later time when I know that's how I want it to add the air cleaner.

    Thoughts?

I haven't seen the inside of the engine bay of many 4 bangers, but wouldn't it be pretty cluttered. And if you're going to run it into a pre filter (i.e dust collector) wouldn't that be a substantial sized hole in your cowl? Almost seems like a snorkel with a dust collector on it would be a little less work. How pricey is that donaldson filter?

Not sure that it would be more or less work. The snorkel is about 6-8 hours worth of install time it seems.

The donaldson air filter is $80 I think, rated at 100k for urban environments. So I would hope to get 1/2 that with the air cleaner and off road.

This is the engine bay. I am not sure how tight things will fit, or if they will without modification. Nothing ever goes as planned but I believe I can access the cowl through the fender as well as directly behind the air box in this photo.

No, air cleaner. It spins the air and the dust falls to the bottom. Similar to Donaldson cleaner for snorkels.

Ah. Yeah Donaldson has few options, there's UMP, etc. Just wish they didn't cost so much and take up so much room in the engine bay.

The fj cruiser version isn't that big looking but I haven't seen it in person. I believe a small Donaldson costs similar ($100-$150).

I saw ump and the donaldsons made for tractors and heavy construction equipment. Overkill for my use but it would be nice. Way to pricey though.

This is the fj cyclone, you can see the dirt this guy accumulated. And the size isn't that bad at all.

Hmm. Anything is doable. It would be interesting just to try it.

Yeah, if it saves me from installing a snorkel, I'll be happy. It will still come out cheaper than the snorkel, not including the air cleaner I would have to get for the snorkel . I really like how my truck looks without one.

Snorkels are weird. Some trucks look good with them on, and there's look different.

Awesome build man. I've been following for a while now. I think your little truck would look pretty good with a snorkel. But I like them on most vehicles.

What are you spying on in here!?
Thanks! I don't think I would hate it, I just like how clean it is right now. I like snorkels on most trucks, but at the same time I see some photos and just think "Damn that looks goofy".

I know what you mean. I thought the new safari snorkels looked horrible when they first released them but they grew on me. I have one now and it looks a lot better in person.
