1998 3rz tans problems

    I recently got a 98 tacoma 4x4 4 cyl. I also noticed the transmission is acting funny, after going down the road, the trans shifts from 1st to 2nd somewhat slower than the other gears then firm at the last second.
    It idles around 350rpm while in D, shifting into other gears is perfectly fine.

    When preloading (to test the stall speed) the rpms only go up to 1,250 (I have a 00 manual which states it should be around 1,850 +/- 150rpm).

    My question is that does this sound like a bad torque converter? If so how long would it take to replace if I were to do it myself.

    These rpm's are based upon the cluster, I have not yet plugged my scan tool into the obd port to see the actual values.

    350rpm?? mine is 550rpm and trying to die yeah drain and fill drain and fill and then see how it is
    I kind of feel your tach may be a bit off.

    I have not tried that yet. Would you think that could only possibly affect the 1-2 shift and not any others?

    My scan tool indicates the rpm is at 1,987 when preloading it (within spec), so the torque converter is good. Idle is around 687 while in D.
    I wonder whats causing the tack to be off.

    Anyway, would a drain and fill of the transmission fluid really help the shifting between 1st and 2nd, anything is possible but its only between those gears.

    It could help but there is only one way to find out. You may have to do it a couple of times. DO NOT FLUSH IT. Run a 500 mile cycle between a few drain and fills.

    As long as it complies to the manual's specs it would be fine. I cannot guarantee this will work but your only other alternative is a rebuild/new tranny.

    my 1-2 shift is a little soft so it may be normal but fluid change first and see how it goes. I go to Yota and they flush it every 60k and yeah its expensive but I got no trans issues so .............. I can't coment on the fluid.

    You will only get about 2-3 quarts on a drain and fill also, per the FSM

    The trans fluid is dirty, ill change it tomorrow:

    The vacuum lines are on the intake. If you have a propane torch, you can turn the gas on (NO FIRE) and move the nozzle around any line you can find. If the motor starts to increase rpms then that would be the line that has a leak, if there is a leak.

    The only connection the tranny has to the intake is a throttle cable.

    I took some slack out of the cable going to the trans, it shifts 90% better now, thanks

    There is a procedure to set that cable up. Not sure which trans you have, but I think its the A340 series.

    No, that's the distance the stopper should protrude from the end of the outer cable.
