stuck...

Welp; I thought it was going to be a quick, no-brainer run up the back side of 165.......oops. went up without chains, got a lill squirley, and backed out of it. That was all she wrote; chained up, and even then it was 100% slip-n-slide....waaay too close to puttin er in the ditch, so I came right back down, made it only 4.5 miles up. I know that it looks lame, but she's STUCK. the last pic kinda shows er chained up. So today I'm buying a better air compressor, and probably an air tank. I could probably gone alot farther if I aired down.

Brings back memories of my trip to NM last year. Went to Lincoln National Forest. Put my ranger in the ditch and had to get very creative to get it out. That trip was my inspiration to by a 4x4 Tacoma!

 

Actually, It took me a while to convince myself, but the stock dunlops are really not too bad. they're quite predictable, and do seem to always "find" traction in snow/slush. I think my primary problem was simply overinflation for the conditions. I just had a factory service done, and they inflated to spec.

I cannot judge any tire in conditions that chains were barely effective. (true, there was no weight in the bed, and I chose to chain the rear)

 

Perhaps chaining the front would have been a better choice?

 

Yup. I figure for going up hill or flat, chain the front; however I wanted to go down, and did not feel like swapping my chains around. The last thing that I want to do is be chained up on the front, and watch my tail pass me though.....

 

That's very generous of you, I think that the Yokohama I/T, Goodyear Duragrip, or Firestone Destination MT would work very well; my stock size is 245/75/16, but no larger than 265/70/16.

 

Had you really been in the ditch, give me a call. When I had the 4Runner I've helped many others get out of the snow. One guy got stuck up here in LA. He left his rig over night in the mountains. That night he called me and the next day we got up extra early and recovered the rig in short order with the winch. Fortunately I've got a nice winch on the Taco to assist withe recovery.

I've got the Yokohama tires on my truck and I must say, I've been "very" impressed with the way they have handled in the mud, rain and snow. These are the tires for my truck. They are good on the highway and they do very well in the snow and mud. Granted, they will not do as well as Mud Terrain tires, but given I spend 90% of my time on the street, and I have a winch, these tires are the way to go.

What do you mean by an air-compressor? Do you have an ARB in one of your diffs?

 

nope, no arb yet; but i'll be getting a more reliable air compressor to re-inflate tires. Yeah, I kinda think that the Yokohamas are the way to go; I may be persuaded to the Firestones. even Kuhmo, and Hercules are lookin pretty good too.
