My issue is, its what i have. Any idea how much more the gas will be ? Stuff in Canada is $$$. I have quite a few things left to weld up so it may be worth my time

If you're on a budget you can use 100% c02... A 20lb tank lasts me around 30-40 lbs of .035 wire and costs about $30 to fill. It's the initial purchase of the cylinder that'll ding you.

I had a very poor experience with self shielded wire when it first came out back in the seventies The different wire reps keep giving me samples I just give it away.

I ran lots of Verticore back in the day love my Dual Shield wire

Only you can know if the expense of going to hard wire is to expensive.

For little welders Straight CO2 and .023 wire

Most Millers welders came with a gas solenoid does yours have one

Don`t forget to change the polarity ifyou switch to hard wire

A full tank of argon is $40 around here. Cheap.

Wouldnt the stuff evaporate after a while? I would guess its just the liquid state of the brake cleaner...it shouldnt alter the metal? Im going to call a welding place Monday...see if they have parts or if its needed to change.

Honestly I don't know, and it sounds like you only used a little but but I wouldn't risk it. Consumables are cheap compared to a trip to the ER or worse.

Well sober me is still in the i want a welder mindset! So I spent a bit of time at work comparing and reading some reviews.

Ive pretty much narrowed it down to the Hobart 210MVP and the Miller 211. The biggest difference Ive seen between the two is the miller has inifite voltage vs only "7 steps" on the hobart. But otherwise they seem ot be able to do all the same things. I know the Hobart is a sort of "cheaper" version of the miller but it seems like it would be all i need and is a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Either way Ill wait till Zoro has a 20% or (hopefully) 30% coupon i can use an order it from there (be a lot cheaper than buying locally sadly).

As for gas Ive only looked a little bit. I see I can buy a new tank (80cuFT) filled with 75%/25% for $250 (mind you thats online but free shipping and no tax). Not really sure how long that lasts though but it does seem like a nice size for transporting if needed. Ill obviously call the local store to get their price but figured that was a good reference point.

So lastly i know Ill need a helmet. The Antra AH6-260-0000 Solar power Auto Darkening Welding Helmet is kind of what Im leaning towards for a "get my feet wet" type thing. its got good reviews that ive found and doesnt break the bank at all. Figure once I know how much welding Id be doing I can upgrade.

I also know Ill need gloves. The welders at work use Tillaman (though they are provided) but they all seem to like them so Ill probably grab a pair or two of those.

So with all that am I missing anything else I would need?

Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
Well my dad broke the boom off his sprayer (again more or less, similar results last year but puttin bandages on new cuts this year) just welded some new c channel in place of the busted up plate and then i butt welded some of the tubing back together after we slid a rod inside for a little extra structure.
it doesnt look great but all that metal other than the c channel is decades old and its sole purpose is to get covered in some pretty corrosive fertilizer and pesticides so meh

Not bad ! I've seen a lot worse hold a lot more. Everyone is so focused on having " #weldporn" style welds but very few can actually do it. Its not a perfect weld but its not bad at all. Just keep at it man!

Yes some of us really have to live in the real world

Although it might be time to start looking at a newer sprayer if the rest is that bad

*** On another note Hobart makes great welders for the Hobby type welder

The other week I finished my press brake, used .035 wire and was shocked at the difference it made on welding thicker metal. First time welding with .035, normally I've only used .030 for all the stuff I've done so far.

Do you plan on doing the home welding thing for the rest of your life? If yes, invest in the gas. You will be amazed at the difference in welding. Another thing, the gas last a long time. I build 20 of these before I need to change cans.

The regulator is less then $70 and depending on the size of tank, another $100 or so. Areas do vary in price for tank leases/buys. The cost of changing to solid wire. Again many different size (weight) of wire spools are available. If you are an at home welder, just get the 5 or 10 pound spool. It sucks if you buy a 44 pound spool and can only use half of it up because it rusted on you and can t be used. It still bothers me when I I have to run out a layer of wire to get to tarnish free wire.

Does a welding table thread exist or can you guys post up your tables. Need to build one. Had a buddy messing with me because I have wooden tables and use a piece of plate to weld on. We call my garage kitchen fab now lmao. @allenfab

Just exchanged personal size tank of argon in calgary, was $70 just for gas. Co2 /argon should be cheaper by a few bucks. Think it roughly $200 to buy tank? Only 1 size we are allowed to own in Canada (small size, think its a C-tank), otherwise for bigger sizes its about $150/year rental plus gas.

If there was such a thing as fab table porn, that would be it.

Over in the garage journal site, there are some great welding table builds.

I do a lot of fan work, but even something like that would be way overkill.

    Still can recognize beauty, though.
